Text for the Day -- John 8:31-36 ---------- Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’
Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
Devotional ---------- The freedom Jesus speaks of in this text is the freedom from sin and death through him. The Jews who were listening to him interpreted his mention of slavery as being slaves of another nation. The key to this freedom in Jesus is continuing to believe in and trust his word. Jesus is truth and his word bears witness to that truth. Bind yourself to Christ and you will be free to embrace eternal life. This is another of those marvelous paradoxes of Jesus.
Prayer --------- I celebrate the freedom I have in you, my Lord. Amen
