Good friend of mine just called me from the White River Apache Reservation. He's on his way to the processor, after tagging a Bull Elk last night. 125 yards, one shot, hit a bit back due to this is is first elk hunt, and it was at last light, and they heard him hit the ground a couple of times. Went out before first light this morning and it was 8-900 yards away. Experienced guides field scored him gross at 409+, and a net of 394. It was 47 1/2 inches between antler tips, and the Apaches want to pedestal mount him, and use him for a while to show just what they have on the reservation. This guy is one happy camper, and what a bruiser to take on your first ever trip out West to hunt, and your first elk hunt. Be hard to ever top that.

Be hard to ever top that. Unbelievable elk there. For $15K+ I'd hope to get a bull of a lifetime.

I know of a fellow who bid 400K for a sheep hunt and never got a shot. He wanted to take a ram they had spotted, but couldn't get a shot at so the next year he bid 250K for the same tag and got him. Due budget cuts in a lot of areas, a lot of F&W people let a tag for up auction so they will have funds to work with.

The amount of money spent on a recreational pursuit usually goes right along with how much money the individual has. I do not begrudge a multi-millionaire spending $650,000 for a ram.... or $15K for an elk..

Nope, glad there are folks able to do it.
The Wite Mountain Apache reservation is one of the premier elk destinations for good reason, as is the Jicarilla reservation.
Post up a pic if you get a chance.

409 green score, 11 years old, only one ivory, by the wildlife biologist on site.
