A buddy texted me this photo today. He said it was recent near Westfield, IN. Just curious...true or is this simply one I missed on the net?

A deer could jump that fence from a standing position without even trying. I can't see this being legit.

Ouch.
I don't remember seeing it before and it appears to still be in velvet. I guess it could be recent .... location could be anywhere.
Edit....im looking at it on my phone so I can't tell for sure if its velvet or not. Maybe?

We see pictures like this every year. Even deer misjudge obstacles from time to time..

We see pictures like this every year. Even deer misjudge obstacles from time to time.. yep, a few years back i seen a doe along the that got its back hoof caught in between the top row of a barb wire fence and asphyxiated itself. The fence was only about 4 ft tall.

That's not even relevant. I'd bet the family are real proud to have gotten that on video at the expense of a nice buck dead.
I still don't believe a healthy buck is not going to clear a 4' fence and misjudge it badly enough to only get half his body over it. This is either photoshopped or staged.

If that's only a 4' fence that deer must be exceptionally small...not everyone is always out to try and fool you

There are plenty of ways that could happen. Deer slips on pavement while jumping across the road, deer finds it's way into neighborhood and gets spooked by cars, dogs whatever. Deer didn't see fence at night. Whatever.............stuff happens.
And if that's a 4' fence, that's a real small deer.

OK, I goofed. The normall measurement of a deer from tip of the nose to the front corner of the eye is 71/4" to 71/2" depending on species. That make the fence about 42" Being that the deer's head is back from the fence a little, I'll still go with 48" on the fence. Maybe the photo was shopped somehow being the deer is somewhat small? Anyway, believe it if you want.

I know first hand of a couple of deer that I had the unpleasant experience of taking off a very similar type fence that was the south of side of one of our township cemeteries-had to have been a major deer crossing. I took care of this cemetery for over a decade so two deer in that time may not mean much. I think most of the problem occurred because there was a fairly deep ditch along with a paved county road next to where I found them. Both of them were in the spring when I first go back in to do a "spring clean up" before mowing started-both of them had been on the fence for awhile too but not long enough to no longer smell-yuck!! One had been a full size doe and the other looked like a smaller yearling.
So yes it happens!
