I was hoping someone would be able to give me some feedback and or suggestion for a 270. Growing up here in Indiana I have just hunted with my bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader but I am heading to North Carolina for a deer hunt this fall during rifle season. I think I have settled on either just taking my 11-87 or getting a 270. Please keep in mind that I know very little about rifles.
I got the new Cabela's flyer today in the mail and they have a Savage 11/111 Trophy Scope Combo on sale for $500. I have asked a few others and they like the savage barrels.
Can anyone tell me if this is a good gun for the price? Any other suggestions that you have are welcome.
Thanks,

I like the Savages just fine, however I would skip the package and get the scope separately.

Savage makes an excellent rifle and 270 is an excellent cartridge. Next weekend is a big gun show in Indianapolis. They might have something your looking for.

The scopes on those package guns are always crap and the rings and bases are aluminum. Nothing wrong with that rifle though.

Definitely skip the packaged rifles. Savage makes excellent rifles and I really like your choice of caliber. Post some pics of the new rifle.

The .270 is just about a perfect deer caliber w/ 130 or 140 grain bullets, I own several of them. Up to 400 yard shots are doable with this round if you know what you are doing. It's a real nice, flat shooter and recoil isn't bad at all.
Although I'm sure the accuracy is fine, I'm not a fan of Savage rifles. I'd go with a Remington 700, Winchester mod 70, or Ruger 77. Regarding scopes, suggest a 3x9 Leupold VX-II.
The big Indy 1500 gun show is this weekend. I'll bet you could find a few deals, and you will be able to look at and handle multiple brands. You might even find a used one with optics already on it?

I forgot to mention my original idea of just getting the 270 barrel for my TC Pro Hunter. I just didn't know if it might be better to get the complete rifle. I am stll tossing around the idea.
Thanks for everyone's feedback.

There are several other brands out there that are on the "High-end" side too. I have a Ruger M-77 MKII, in .270 and have a Leupold VX-II 4 to 12 power mounted on it. Made some 300 + yard shots on Deer down here in Ky. Had the factory trigger replaced with a Timney Trigger, making it much lighter trigger pull.

At one time, Remington rifles were known for the best "out of the box accuracy", but that's chsnged. Now Savsge rifles hold ghe advantage. They are as good as the rest, better than most.

I bit on the TC hype and own one too, but I wouldn't recommend going that route. After owning one, I think they are pretty crappy guns that have bought their way into the hunting scene mostly through a powerful marketing campaign. To watch the TV hunting shows you would think TC is the only gun manufacturer out there. In my opinion they are too short, the drop in the stock is too extreme, and they are basically a glorified version of a simple H&R single barrel shotgun that you can buy all day long for $100, Also, why limit yourself to a single shot?
Get a good bolt action hunting rifle.

I like the T/C. Have 4 and two Contenders. I can get a second shot very quickly but have never needed it while hunting. Very well made firearms, never been disapponted with the quality.

ANTLER - I have a deal for you that will save you a LOT of money.
Due to health reasons I will be unable to hunt this year thus will not be using my blued Encore barrel in .270....how bout you send me $200 and I ship you the barrel...you use it for the season and ship it back to me upon your return...and I return your $200 minus the original shipping costs. (maybe $25 at the most)
So...all you have to do is come up with a scope setup which you keep....or just put one of your scopes you already have on the barrel and take it off before you ship it back to me.
Free is always in my budget...this is as close as I can get to that for you.
Hit me up if this entices you at all.
