Text for the Day -- Psalm 107:1-3, 35-38, 41-43 ---------- O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there he lets the hungry live, and they establish a town to live in; they sow fields, and plant vineyards, and get a fruitful yield. By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their cattle decrease.
but he raises up the needy out of distress, and makes their families like flocks. The upright see it and are glad; and all wickedness stops its mouth. Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
Devotional ---------- The redeemed see and know the works of God in their midst. This is not always so obvious to people who do not live with much consciousness of God being present to their lives. The work of God to redeem the lowly and needy is a solid Biblical theme. The steadfast love of God is seen in God's love for the poor and his care for the oppressed. The wise person is invited to see the works of God and take heart in God's steadfast love.
Prayer ------ Gracious God, open my eyes to behold your works. Open my heart to join you in caring for the hungry and oppressed. Amen
