Indiana is not the most well-known of the Midwestern states when it comes to whitetails. But when considering the criteria used for Antler Nation grades, it comes out near the top. The state has a ton of deer, millions of acres of public land and some of the most affordable non-resident license fees in the nation. It's also a state that's proven itself willing to change as is evidenced by the fairly recent adoption of a one-buck rule. In 2012, the state will allow crossbows during the archery season and has made changes to youth hunting regulations as well.
And Indiana has churned out some big bucks as well. The southern tier of the state, in fact, has been a real hotbed of big buck activity in recent years. Overall, Indiana is a great state to consider when it comes to whitetails.
Antler Nation Knowledge: Indiana is a shotgun-only state for deer hunters (although you can use pistol calibers). So if you plan on hunting there during gun season, leave the bullets and bring the slugs. www.realtree.com/hunting/articles-and-how-to/whitetail/antler-nation/indiana

And I suspect that on a pretty fair percentage of the 902K acres of public land NO hunting is allowed. Many state, city, and county parks come to mind as examples.

Do they count the resivoirs in the 900K acres or not? Just off the top Monroe, Patoka, Raccoon, Cagles Mill, Salamonie, Mississinnewa, Huntington Brookville would probably be close to 50-60K or more without looking at the stats.
HNF...not sure how many acres that is but a large chunk. I can believe 900K which rounds up to 1M acres in rough math.

www.theoutdoorwire.com/tow_release.php?ID=117709This link describes Indiana's forests as 85% privately owned. So I did the math, and it's 645,000 acres aproximately of public owned forests...of course not all land is forests. But I'm guessing that it is probably not far off that Indiana's total public land is around 1 million. But others have said, on how much of that is hunting allowed? I doubt it all is, as my youngest constantly complains about Indiana Dunes not even allowing fishing. I have doubts that reports like these are totally factual or unbiased.

As the population of Indiana increases from folks moving into Indiana from Ill., Ky, & Ohio, some of these areas will shrink due to many development variations.

Unlike most surrounding states, Indiana's population is steadily growing. There have been several high profile publications that have given Indiana a pretty rosy business forecast and have predicted continued growth. My school district (where I teach) is really struggling to keep up with enrollment growth.

So, all these people moving to Indiana, is nobody moving out? Where do you live??? I live in VERY RURAL area of Kentucky, after moving from Northern Vanderburgh Co. Indiana. The population of Indiana is growing & while we're on the subject what happens if the Government decides to sell the Hoosier Nation Forest to China to help pay down the debt?

King Harry and the Kenyan would no doubt like that idea. But then they could sell Nevada to the Chinese, it is 90% owned by the Federal Government.

There are NO very rural areas in Ky. Some are rural. None very rural. The closest Wal-Mart is how far away? No need to even comment on the stupid remark about the HNF and China.
