I am in the market for a new shotgun scope for my 870 12ga. But I know very little about different kinds of scopes. I know I want a 3-9x, I am not a fan of the bdc reticle. I am not really sure what other features to look for in a scope. I have heard arguments for and against using a rifle scope on a shotgun, besides the eye relief will the kick damage the scope? I am wanting to keep it under $300 and obviously the cheaper the better. I keep reading leupold are really good scopes and have spent quite a bit of time on their website. Is there much of a difference between the vx1 and vx2s? Thanks in advance for all your help!!

I can't answer the guestion on the difference between the vx1 & vx2, I have two leupold vx1 shotgun,/muzzleloader scopes but don't own a vx2. You have a good selection of scopes in your price range, Nikon, Bushnell, Redfield, Leupold, etc. The two main reasons I like the VX1 shotgun/ml scope was the heavy duplex reticle and it's preset parallax distance is set for 75 yards, I think most rifle scopes are set for 100 yards. Some don't like the heavy duplex but it's helps these "older eye's" of mine. LOL! I did buy one of the new redfields, I like it but It doesn't seem as clear as the leupold. The nikons I looked at were very clear, but for my eye sight the cross hairs were just to fine to suit me. YES, Eye relief is VERY important on a shotgun, been there, done that.

Take a look at the 2x7 Leupold's for shotguns. The crosshairs are larger than a rifle scope for low light conditions. h.h.

I'll go along with that.

The 2x7x33 is what i have on my shotgun and ML. kirch stated he wanted a 3x9. I think Leupold does offer a 3x9x40 with the same ( heavy duplex) crosshairs.

IMO .. a 3-9x40 is a lot of scope for a shotgun.
I would personally look at the 1.5x on the low end .... to 7x on the high end ... variable scopes designed for typical shotgun ranges.
If you have your mind made up that a 3-9x40 is what you want then $300 should buy you a VXII Leupold and IMO they cannot be beat for the price.

I have put Leupold 3x9x40 vx 11 on all my guns, will not use anything different. Nikon monarchs are the closest second. Can't beat the forever warrantys.

kirch86, The main differance probably is in the lens, the vx1 has the standard multicoat system, the vx11 has, what leupold calls a multicoat 4 system which is suppose to be a better, clearer coating.

Good advice by muzzleloader, Leupold is all I use also.
I put the 2x7 VXII shotgun scope on an 870. It's OK, but not near as nice as a straight up 3x9 rifle scope. Next go-round on a shotgun I went with the 3x9 VXII rifle scope, much better.
I don't like the fat crosshairs on their shotgun scopes, they obstruct too much of the target, are not as nice for sighting in on paper, and really no advantage when hunting.
The scope mounting system is critical to maintain accuracy, as shotguns kick like a mule, don't take a short cut there. Cantilever barrel with good heavy rings is the best. If you don't have a cantilever barrel, I'd have a good gunsmith mount a scope base atop the receiver, and then good heavy rings. Stay away from those cheesy wrap around 'saddle' mounts'.
Get some Butler Creek flip caps too. Very handy for keeping scope lenses clean and dry.

yea, I bought the mossberg cantilever barrel/scope package for the 870, scope is cheap. I sighted the gun in last year and it seemed to hold pretty good. I brought the gun out and was going to test out a couple different loads and I was all over the place. I was shooting off of a lead sled. gonna get a good quality scope and see how she shoots again. Thanks for all the replies!!! much appreciated!!

I ended up getting a vx-1. Went out and did some shooting yesterday. just wanted to check how it grouped. 3 shots at 100 yards all touched. very pleased!!!
