While I undersstand and agree that any deer killed is a trophy this is more geared to inches of bone on a deers head.
I wonder for the "trophy" hunters out there when talk gets thrown around of growing trophy bucks or "I'm a trophy hunter" statements are passed around what do you consider a trophy deer by inches on its head. Typical and non typical. Not really looking for a good mature deer comment. Don't get me wrong I agree 100% that a six or seven year old buck or doe harvested is a trophy that one should be proud to take. As well as a kids first deer or a meat hunter filling his freezer with does and his or hers allowed buck of whatever size.
For Indiana, how many inches of antler on a deers head are we talking does in take to consider it a trophy in an Indiana "trophy" hunters mind to consider it such.

The same as any other state. No set number. It's a personal thing. Each person has a different minimum.

Thats my question. In each and every ones mind that classifies themselves a trophy hunter whats their minimum.

Personally, I would consider any deer I would have mounted to be, by definition, a trophy. The magic number of inches that means for me is probably around 140". However, that could go down if it was a unique rack. Also, the first decent buck I kill off my own property I am currently buying stands an awfully good chance of landing on my wall. But in general, I consider 140 to be the separating point between good bucks and REALLY good bucks. I see deer in the 120s and 130s every year. I don't see deer over 140 every year. I've been hunting deer for 12 years and have been fortunate enough to kill two bucks that grossed 150s and netted 140s. They are among the 4 or 5 biggest deer I've ever seen while hunting. That qualifies them as true "trophies" in my estimation.

Actually for me its more an age /maturity thing ... Sure antlers with many inches are a great thing but that are some giant racked 2.5 year olds out there .It just a personal thing .The 194 inch Downing buck was aged by the state biologist in our area at the local check station 13 years ago at 2.5 years only no older..
A trophy is a perception thing.

To me it depends on where ya hunt, and what your using. One thing i've learned over the years is, where ya hunt is more important than how you hunt.

Hummmm.....I don't buy that one. If your a trophy hunter, you don't shoot bucks that don't meet your standards ANYWHERE. It doesn't hurt to not get one, and trophy deer hunters have long ago matured past that point.

Tell that to someone thats hunted public property all there life, then stick em' on some good private property. What was a trophy in their eyes has suddenly changed.

Do a Google search for Dan Miller, a amish fellow from Hart County Ky. You might find a story that tells of the scouting trip just before the hunt. David Miller scouted it out because Dan couldn't make the trip. I talked to David the other day at length about the events of that trip. These guys are meat hunters and trophy hunters combined, except they don't shoot small bucks. they have a 150 acres lease that feeds several families. And they hunt public land. Let me know if you can't find the story, I'll link to it. Those are just two of the thousands that don't shoot dinks on public land. True trophy hunters won't. There is no reason for them to do so.

Timex, did you not say a Trophy was personal? Hard to debate anything with someone that talks out both sides of their mouths.
Besides, what does your story have to do with my post that you highlighted? Absolutely nothing.

Yeap, said that. The poster was obviously looking for a certain number of inches to base the trophy on. I said that was a personal choice. To some a trophy is 160+, to others it 125+. Hard to say that 125+ bow kill isn't a trophy when it qualifies for the record book. But there's dozens of guys that I know that won't shoot 125" deer, becuase they have already killed plenty of them. To someone that hasn't, more power to them for doing so.

Like i said, its more important on where ya hunt, if a 160" isn't present, you cant kill it. I don't care how good of a hunter you think you might be. Its not gonna happen.

So, what's YOUR answer? (You killed one way smaller than 160" last year and there were several bigger.)

I got more than two, the Ga. guys all had cams out and all got better bucks than the one you shot. You had bigger yourself, so you say. So why downgrade? Don't answer. I'm done with this.

Span asked a specific question and asked for specific numbers. So far, I'm the only one who has given him a number. I'm interested in this thread. If you don't want to throw out a number, why not take your quibbling to a different thread?
