This issue was suggested by the public from our first round of Got INput. After staff review these issues were identified as ones that the Division of Fish and Wildlife are interested in pursuing.
Primitive Muzzleloader Season
Add a deer season for flint-lock or cap-lock muzzleloading long guns, .44 caliber or larger, with open sights, shooting black powder (no black powder substitutes) and patched round ball only. Season dates from the first Monday in January, and continue for another 6 consecutive days.

Once again, pandora's box here as well.
I like the idea of hunting with the primitive weapons, but they are already allowed in the other seasons.
Would these extra seasons take away from the majority of hunters so that a few can have the woods to themselves?

oppose
as a traditional archer, I see no need for a special season when I can use my preferred equipment right alongside someone with a crossbow now. same for blackpowder arms. Everyone is so danged afraid the guy next door has some kind of advantage over them. jeesh Hunt with whatever legal equipment you desire and quit worrying about your neighbors choice of weapon or what size/gender deer they harvest.

I strongly oppose it ML hunters have a season already weapon choice is theirs .We no longer need more excuses to kill deer or more license taxed on us .

I'd support a early ML season, same as Ky. already has. But it would have to be open to any ML rifle (.44 cal. on up) and scopes allowed and any projectile. Makes no sense to limit a hunter to something that will maim and cripple vs. allow a quick one shot kill. The limit is already imposed by one shot and several seconds required to reload. Yes, being that the State is involved in a deer reduction effort, more tools are better than less..

I strongly support. Let me first say that I do not have nor will I hunt with a " primitive " muzzle loader. You have to give these guys credit though. They are the only special interest group that says they want their own season but hey we"ll take the complete end of the season and the absolute farthest from the rut. I say throw them a bone. Every other group either wants the first crack at a deer or the best time to hunt or to take away from another group to grow bigger bucks. This aint taking from anyone.

The hunter with the REAL smokepole has 32 days to use it already. Where have we heard that "32 days" before. I don't see this as a biggy, but IF they are going to do it they need to include conical bullets in that as well cause they sure are "primitive" too. Better killing too....

I hunt mostly with a flintlock and I used to believe this would be a good thing but no more. The black powder limitation is a severe handicap to many as the stuff is just not that available to many without a long drive or mail-order of 25 pounds. I wouldn't mind an October season for all ML as long as we could harvest our one buck.

I need an explanation for this. The only advantage most inlines posses is the ease of mounting a scope and a scope is much easier to line up than open sights.

Translation: I'm not for any restrictions on ML's. As long as it LOADS from the muzzle, use it. Scopes facilitate cleaner kills. Conical bullets do as well and are primitive. Being that these rifles are already legal, I'm not getting this add on? If you want to give them something, then it has to be a 2 dayer in Oct. on one of the weekends.

I wouldn't mind an October season for all ML as long as we could harvest our one buck. I'll be the spoilsport here and say that I don't want firearms hunting of any sort in October, be it muzzleloaders, rifles, or what have you.

one can use primitive equipment from Oct 1 thru the end in Jan. selfbow, longbows, recurves in October, flintlocks in November etc. Just because your neighbor carries a compound/crossbow/HP rifle doesnt mean you have to.

2 day muzzle loader in mid to late october for ANY muzzle loader and either sex. it wont hurt the deer herd any and it will give these guys 2 more days to hunt. plus it will get quite a few out of the woods before opening day of gun season in november. it doesnt hurt any thing to hunt with guns in october, ky does it twice. 2 days for kids and 2 days for muzzleloader season.
