Text for the Day -- Psalm 75:6-9 ---------- For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up; but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another. For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed; he will pour a draught from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs. But I will rejoice forever, I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
Devotional ---------- In the midst of all the ambiguous images in this psalm, a central truth is clear, it is God who judges life. It is God who "puts down one and lifts another." This concept is expressed in the teaching of Jesus as, "the first shall be last and the last first," or, "Whoever humbles himself will be exalted and whoever exalts himself will be humbled." It is hard to keep this perspective as one lives life. How do you remind yourself of this basic truth?
Prayer ------ Lord, fill my mouth with the taste of your praise and not the bitter dregs of judgment. Amen
