Text for the Day -- Leviticus 21:1-4 ---------- The LORD said to Moses: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them:
No one shall defile himself for a dead person among his relatives, except for his nearest kin: his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother; likewise, for a virgin sister, close to him because she has had no husband, he may defile himself for her. But he shall not defile himself as a husband among his people and so profane himself.
Devotional ---------- The priests in the Old Testament were limited in their being able to touch dead bodies. This limitation was confined to family members. If they did touch a dead person they would be defiled and made unclean. When Jesus was asked to come to the aid of Jairus' daughter he does not hesitate, even after he was told that she was dead. He did not consider the taboo of the Old Testament. In one sense she is a member of his family. But even if not, he is not controlled by the power of death. He is Lord of the dead and the living.
Prayer -------- Help me look to Jesus, O God, in death and life. Amen
