Text for the Day -- Mark 4:30-34 ---------- He also said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
Devotional ---------- Like a great teacher Jesus shared the wisdom of the kingdom of God in little stories and metaphors that forced his listeners to take responsibility for their learning. These stories were an invitation to struggle with seeing in a new way. Jesus was calling all people to come to the realization that their life can participate in the kingdom of God, both in receiving its blessings and sharing in its ministry. Such invitations, when responded to, become a discovery of freedom within one's life. Jesus' teaching is focused on people living out of a dynamic relationship with God and not just following a set of rules.
Prayer ------ Open my eyes Lord that I may see you and come to know the joy and freedom of your kingdom more deeply. Amen
