Wow, that is in my neck of the woods.
I don't understand this at all. You have to make sure it is a bearded bird before you shoot by law. And I would try to make sure it was a shooter bird too. I guess everyone is different, but I don't hunt turkeys for the meat, I hunt for a nice bird. Granted I wouldn't hunt them if I didn't eat them, but I am just picky on the birds I shoot.
Of course saying this, I will end up shooting a 2 year old 8 inch bearded tom just so I can get back to the sauger run!!! LOL.....heres hoping so lol.

I was hunting at Patoka when this happened and seen the IDNR officers interrogating the man in the parking lot of the office. I stopped by to double check if a piece of property was huntable and when I pulled into the lot there were 4 ICO's along with 2 plain-clothes officers talking to this older man. They had all his gear spread out in the bed of his truck, one of the officers had on rubber gloves and they were in a somewhat heated conversation. I could overhear the "shooter" saying, "I honestly do not remember pulling the trigger!" over and over again. The ICO's looked like they were frustrated with this guy. Eventually I was able to talk to one of the CO's and I said, "Man that guy must have messed up big time!" and he said, "Yeah he shot his buddy here in the park!"
I don't get it, I don't get it, I don't get it! We are hunting an animal that you CLEARLY have to see a beard to shoot but yet these idiots shoot at movement and end up with injured or dead people after they pull the trigger. Makes ya wonder how many hens are killed each year and then tossed in the weeds when the "hunter" realizes the bird wasn't a tom! I don't know what the solution is. It's not an accident at all when someone does this.....it's ignorance and stupidity. SO FRUSTRATING!

All "accidents" have causes in these cases it is stupidity and the overwhelming desire to kill something. That desire blocks out all reasoning and even training.
The chance of killing the biggest Tom or buck in the woods does not warrant a reckless shot.
Yes, some need more that a chewing out by a CO and their own personal regret.
A split second of carelessness can cause a LIFETIME of misery .
