Sometimes I really wish I was the type of person to just pay to have things done. . . Last Thursday I left on my lunch break and went and bought a new bow case. On my way back to work the engine in my truck locked up. Got it pushed into a parking lot and went back to work and finished my day. Got the truck home that evening. Took Friday off of work and worked all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the truck. Got a junkyard engine and put a new set of bottom end bearings in it. As of now I just have the engine sitting back in the truck on the mounts, but nothing else hooked up. I am gonna go to work tomorrow so I can just get away from it for a day. Days like today I really wish I was the type of person to just pay to have things done. I don't know if it is just my cheapness or pride that won't let me do it, but sometimes I really wish I could just get over it. . . Sorry for my rant/pitty party, just thought some of you guys could relate.

I'm like you. Do everything I can myself whether it be car or home repair. Gotta save the money. Most get $600 around here to pull and replace an engine. That doesn't include any other mechanical work. 1 day job if you stay busy. My well pump went out the other day but......I had to be at work that day so I hired a local well drilling place. $900 dollars!!!!!!! 2 hours labor and a new pump. You can buy a pump for $350 online and really about 2 hours labor but they charge $80/hour labor. Could have saved $550 staying at home and got paid too on a vacation day. Don't mind someone making a dollar but not all at one time out of my pocket. LOL

I need to replace the shocks on my truck. A few years ago I wouldn't have thought about having it done. Now I can't even get under a vehicle long enough to change the oil. Some parts of life stinks after 70!

I figure that I am much better off sticking to my own job and area of expertise and just working a little harder or longer so I can pay trained professionals to do my repair and maintenace projects. Heck of a lot less stressful, plus I've got plenty to do at my job plus keeping up with things around the farm.
However, when I was younger and dind't have the cash, I did most eveything myself, so I can certainly understand. You gotta do, what you gotta do.
At the other end, I think there are a few hard heads around that have it in their brain that they can do everything better and cheaper than somebody else, when that is not very often the case. Especially when they step out of their area of expertise, or don't have the proper facilities, tools, etc. to do something.

Don't mind someone making a dollar but not all at one time out of my pocket. LOL Funny you should say that, I put a new well pump in at my sister's house in January. I work with diesel engines for my job, just in a test cell environment. I don't typically don't have any access issues to deal with while wrenching on them. I am sure that there are other individuals that could do the job a lot faster than I can though. Just trying to save myself a dollar where I can. I had all the tools, Hoist and stand to do the work, however things are kind of crowded in my garage even before I started the engine swap. . . It just seems like this is the job that never ends, seems like I always forget something from the parts store and have to make another trip. But the bright side is I am on the home stretch of this project. Tranny is in and bolted up, just have to bolt some accessories on the front of the engine, filler full of fluids and then the test drive!!!!!

I hear ya! I quit shade treeing after I got rid of my 77' F-150 4X4. It's too complicated and lack of speciality tools are my excuses now.

Started the truck up tonight. . . Smoked like a freight train for the first 10 minutes or so. I completely fogged up the neighborhood. Had a lifter tapping until I drove it around for awhile. Runs strong and real quiet. . . I love it when a plan comes together!!!

Glad to hear you got it up and running Kirch. It's always good to get a fresh engine going. I used to be like you are. I'd work on all my own stuff until vehicles got so complicated. I've been in the Ford Mustang restoration hobby for over 30 years. I enjoy doing all the mechanical work on the cars I've done. I have the engines, rearends, and trannys professionally rebuilt then I do all the installation work. I also do all the intererior work, including electrical. I do all my own engine detail work and body assembly after having the cars professionally painted. It's been a very enjoyable hobby, and I"ve learned a lot doing it. As I"ve got older I've slowed down some though. About all I do with our newer cars is change the oil.
