And I am trying to get advice anywhere I can find it.
I stopped in the local pro shop last night, because I was told that would be the best place to start. He has a used Mathews, Legacy I think and he said it was around five years old, that is right at my price range. His newer bows are a little out of my price range, but I might be able to swing a deal on one if I do a little horse trading. If I go that route I'd be looking at a PSE. My buddy knows a guy selling a Hoyt Katera that he is insistent upon me buying, because the Mathews is old and isn't a good bow anymore.
At this point I am partial to the Mathews. I pulled it back at the shop and it seemed to be the right draw length. It is 60-70 pounds, which is right where I want it.
Does anyone here have any experience with these bows? Would I be crazy to pick the Mathews over the Hoyt or should a guy start out his archery experience with a brand new bow?

Don't get caught up in brand names, if that bow feels "just right" to you and it's a fair price go for it. Bows are very subjective; I haven't drawn a Hoyt yet that I cared for but they are very popular - suit yourself and don't worry about anyone else.

The reviews I have read on the Katera seem to be very mixed. They say it is a good, fast bow, but a lot of folks said it was heavy and beat them up when they shot it.

All preference. Shoot as many as you can. Pay attention especially to weight of the bow, grip, and pull. By pull I mean make sure it's not jerky at all. You'll know when u found the right none for ya cuz after the first shot you'll just smile like a kid on christmas

Buy it! I shot a Legacy from 2002-2007, then I bought the DXT. The Legacy was a real shooter for me. I killed a lot of game with it including a bunch of deer, turkeys, and a 400# black bear. I also shot my best indoor 5 spot with a score of 298/26. I had a RipCord drop away rest and Spot Hogg Hunter Hogg It sight. I also put on a Torqueless grip and a string stop, Winners Choice strings and a 1/4" Meta Peep. So I had it tricked out. I thought that I would never get rid of it but then along came the DXT. It is a good shooter for me also. PM me if you have any other questions.

I recently switched from pse to Hoyt and love it but with that said I believe that the katera had a 6" brace height which isn't ideal for someone new to bow hunting. Don't think you went wrong with the pse heard those are very nice bows for the money.

Not sure what you are driving at there; the draw cycles between different cam systems can feel very different?
