I had an interesting discussion with some hunters I guided the other day about my Red Label. We were talking of Ruger's decision to stop manufacturing the gun and a few of the guys suggested a few options considering the gun (one said I should donated it to a good cause and he'd take good care of her ;D). I love this O/U and she's never missed a lick for me. It's custom engraved (by Flannery of my late Pointer, Rockpoint Chief Cotton), 20ga., 26" brls. Just thought it would be interesting to gather some thoughts and opinions. Here is a recent shot of the gun on a day with my son in the field:

Why in the heck would you set a good player on the sidelines. Most firearms properly cared for will outlast us.
My dad has an old old LC Smith 20ga side by side that has seen tons of use small game hunting and is still a dandy weapon. Shows plenty of wear, but that just give is character if it's yours.

And just why would "a few of the guys" suggest that you get rid of it? Would appear either they were just joking or they are playing you! You decide.

Beautiful gun...I would definitely continue to use it though.

Use it. Take care of it - lube the pivot points, don't slam it shut, etc.
It'll out last you.
If you shot well with it, why change?
I have a Browning Citori Special Sporting Clays Golden Clays edition that I shoot pretty well. Guys look at me like I'm crazy when I take it out pheasant hunting.
I'm approaching 120,000 rounds with it and it's still a LONG ways from being worn out. (bought it new in 1995)
I have a Nikko Golden Eagle O/U thats had 2 other owners. I knew them, and they both shot registered trap with it. They kept a round count too. I did have to have the rib re-soldered, it's got over a million rounds thru it, and the locking lever is still right of center.

It should be an heirloom, eventually. For now it should be used and used well.
What would you value more as something handed down from a relative, a gun that was never really used but looked pretty, or one that was used and cared for as it should be?
I'd value the used gun much more, as many memories of hunts and times spent would come along with it, and these things would be relived every time that gun comes out of the cabinet. The gun that looks nice would stay in the cabinet and for the most part would be forgotten.
