I really like the looks of the old Winchester .44mags. But I can also get a new Henry .44mag for about the same price. Any experience or pref.? Thanks

I'd say Winchester 100%. Had a henry .22 a few years ago and went to load it on the second time shooting it ever and the entire firing pin mechanism (and parts of the top slide) fell right out the rear end of it. Maybe a rare and random factory mishap but I'll probably never own another one. Do the classic Winchester!

Curses on me for speaking against the American Henry, but those things are ugly and the ones I have handled lacked fit and finish. Maybe handling a more recently manufactured one would change my mind, but I just can't bring myself to pick another one up to look at.

Hood if you like the looks of the old Winchester .44 Mag I would say go for it. This is especially true if you are talking about the really old Winchesters, not the newer angle eject ones. The old ones are much slicker than the newer ones. And, even comparing the newer Winchesters to the Henrys, I would still pick the Winchester.

which one do you like better I like the Winchester, but have been told that the Henry has better accuracy. I can get a new Henry for about the same price as a used Winchester. Just thought I would see what others have experienced here.

Get a Marlin if you want a lever gun, better than either of those. A better choice is a Ruger 77 in .44 mag.

The new Marlins have not been good at all and Remington stopped making them until they could figure out how to build one The issue with the pre Remington ones is the bore diameter can vary and if you get one on the large side you are going to need to use oversized cast bullets to get accuracy. My 1894SS would not shoot any JHP worth a darn. I now have a blued one that does fine. (It was one I bought used and could try first). Were I looking for a 44 rifle now I would have to check in to a Ruger; one of their semiauto's like Woody has would be an option as well. (used market)

I'm really looking for a lever gun. I considered the Marlin, but I heard they had some problems and even stopped production.
Thanks again for all the help!
