Any of you boys camp when you go squirrel hunting[late summer, fall, winter]? Been getting the itch to do that again, next year. Do you use a camper or tents? I used to have all that equip., years ago, but got away from it. Debating on buying the tent and equip. or possibly an old[cheap] popup camper and give it a try again, in early fall. May have a 65 acre woods lined out, not too far from me to do this. Nobody squirrel hunts much up in my country anymore. I can get tons of woods to hunt them, but after Oct. 1 ya get a lot of bit****g from the bow hunters for disturbing deer.

When I was younger I would camp the first week of season with my buddies..... That was back when school started in Sept...... We would hunt, clean and soak them... then fry them up on the fire as camp food.... I miss those days.

Its just not squirrel hunting if you're not tent camping and cooking on the fire.

I am a backpacker with intentions of hunting small game this year in the HNF. Any suggestions for cooking squirrel or rabbit over an open fire on a spit? Maybe bake 'em wrapped in foil on hot coals?

I've spread-eagled them and pinned them to a green limb by the legs. Dangle over a hot cooking fire, turning often and baste frequently with your favorite cooking oil laced with spices until golden brown. Takes about an hour and a half IIRC.
