I am going to put together an AR to keep in the safe along with a few thousand rounds of ammo ..... you know, so that when the zombies rise or when they have a sale for the new "air jordans" that boils over into world collapse I will be ready.
Anyway, the price difference between steel case and brass case is a bunch .... any drawbacks to having steel cased ammo? It will be stored in a climate controlled safe and it will only be used in the above mentioned events.

Some chambers don't like the lacquer-coated steel cases. I think some depends on the individual gun, but there are some brand-specific guns that don't like brand-specific ammo. What those combinations are, I don't know.
Steel casings are generally considered non-reloadable too, most of them are Berdan primed.
Hopefully someone else can be more specific- I've never shot steel cased ammo through my AR since I reload.

I think the new Wolf ammo is polymer coated instead of lacquer.
I read some blogs that showed going back and forth between brass cases and steel cases caused issues because the steel cases didnt expand the same as the brass and they allowed blowback to gum up the chamber. When you then used a brass case with the dirty chamber they tended to stick in the chamber.

Buy a few boxes of the steel case ammo first to see if it will cycle through your AR. I gave up on it years ago.

I've shot a lot of the Wolf ammo, and have had no problems with it. Russian made I believe. Can't imagine trying to recover all the cases to reload when you can but this stuff super cheap and let them fly. There may be some difference in the loading between .223 and those sold as 5.56mm. Generally, the 5.56 is hotter ammo.

Have read where some companies [foreign] have gone to brass washed steel cases to eliminate problems. Search around and get more info.

Can't imagine trying to recover all the cases to reload I don't do any tacticool mall-ninja stuff with mine at the range. A brass catcher directly into a coffee can works pretty well.

The import stuff is as cheap as loading. I might be inclined to load for it if I deer hunted with it. Maybe.

I've never had a problem with any of the russian ammo feeding in my Ar's(I have 3) but had hard primers on one lot of wolf. Most of it is underpowered and extremely dirty however. I've gotten away from the stuff in the last few years and shoot brass cased full power Israeli or federal now. A little more expensive but no worries.

I think for my needs steel case will work. Will likely buy a small qty just to make sure they cycle fine before buying bulk.
