Not sure if this is the right forum or not but here is my question. I am buying a Savage Arms bolt action slug gun. I am topping it with a Bushnell Trophy DOA slug scope. I am wanting to be able to shoot as far as 200 yards and I am not sure what slug would be best and if I should go with a 12 or 20 gauge. Any suggestions would be welcomed! Thanks!

If I was going to buy a slug gun today, I'd buy a 20 ga. Just as much range as a 12 and less painful on your shoulder. As to what slug, you just have to buy a bunch and shoot them. The gun will tell you which one it likes.
Be aware of what lot number you buy. If you find one that the gun really likes, run back to the store and buy as many of that lot number as you can afford. A different lot number will shoot differently.

I have that gun in 12ga. Best ammo I've found is 2-3/4" Federal Barnes copper expanders, 1oz hollow points. Zero it at 100 yards, then set up targets at 50, 100, 150, 200 & 250 yards. Hold dead on target and see what the bullet drop is at various ranges. Write it down and put a sticker on the gun or scope with the data, then use a laser range finder when you hunt.
You can make kills with this rig at those ranges if you know what you are doing. You will find that the bullet drop beyond 150 is significant (roughly 18" at 200), but use your laser, know your weapon, and take a good rest and it can be done. A stout cross wind can also cause significant bullet drift with these big slow moving bullets at longer ranges too, be aware of it.
