I decided that today would be my last hunt for deer of the season and I didn't see a thing on the stand. I got out of my tree and headed down the trail back towards my house. At one point, I heard movement ahead of me and I could tell that it was not a squirrel so I froze. A few moments later a doe appeared and she was headed right towards me! I dropped down on one knee, turned the scope to 3x and waited for her to reappear. She appeared exactly where I expected her to and at about 10 yards I squeezed the trigger....CLICK! The gun did not fire and I was dumbfounded so I just froze. The deer heard something but wasn't scared, so she simply walked back the way she came. I am shooting a Savage Ml-II with 209 primers and I have never had one not go off! I opened the bolt and the primer had an extremely light strike, so I dumped it for a new one. By this time, the doe was out of sight so I continued, slowly back towards my house. I made it another 25 yards or so and saw 4 does moving from a small field into the woods directly in front of me. I was ready this time, so I waited as they went into some brush and one emerged about 25 yards away, but I hesitated because it was not a clear shot. It took her about 3 seconds to pick me off and all 4 ran away. I felt like crap and just wanted to go home and I could see my house by this point but it was a good ways off. I continued walking towards the field and made it to the edge and I noticed between 8 and 10 does entering the woods! I froze and quickly moved to the edge of some brush and a doe popped back into the field. I sent a 250gr SST through her heart and she was done in 20 yards. The other deer went nuts and they were running all around me in a big circle while I reloaded. Once I reloaded about a minute passed when I heard a few different does bleating. I couldn't believe that some of them were still in the area. One stepped out about 40 yards and I quickly shouldered the gun and fired hitting her low in gut. A few hours later and 1/2 mile of tracking and I recovered her as well. Awesome hunt!! It ain't over until its over...now I am done for the year. I am so glad that this gun has finally taken a deer after owning it for 5 or 6 years!!

Awesome! I've noticed that the bigger the group of does/deer the more likely some or all of them are likely to stick around the area after a shot. Looks like you experienced that. Congratulations!

Good for you on taking a double this late in the season.
By the way...I have had experienced those "light strikes" to the primer too. Mine was because the bolt handle was "slightly" open rather than completely closed. Try it sometime with only a primer in an unloaded gun. You'll see what I mean. Good hunting, BOB

Congrat's, Way to end the season. Pull your firing pin and clean the pin and bolt. I'll bet there is just crud in the channel.

Nice way to finish up. No fires are always interesting. I had a cruddy bolt in a Knight 2 years ago... I tried 4 times to drop the hammer on a doe, only to eventually thumb the bolt forward past the hang and kill the deer anyway. Lesson #51,732 learned. Cool dude. Last weekend double = WAY awesome!
