I have a Chrony F1 that has served me well for many years and cost under 100.00 when I bought it. Cheap and does what I want it to do. h.h.

Woody, you can't go wrong with a shooting chrony. I've had a beta model for six years that goes to the range with me and it gets me everything I need---hi lo sd es and has enough memory to record six shot strings. data box is right there on the bench with you. service is very good if you ever need it and they've been around a long time. You can get more expensive ones that have ballistic programs and or interface with a computer but I've never needed that technology as I keep a log book with each of my rifles and can enter the data into the computer by hand when I get home. I do,however, have access to an Oehler, which is a cadillac, at my brothers shop but have never needed it. Another brand I looked at was CED,I think they're still around, which also was attractive, but bought Chrony due to price.

At least one of the companies will replace the chrony at a reduced cost if you ever accidentally shoot it. I'm a firm believer that if you have a chrony, eventually you, or someone else, will shoot the chrony regardless of how careful you tend to be.
I believe Shooting Chrony is one of the companies that has the reduced replacement cost. I'd lean towards one of the basic ones but with a separate read-out that stays on the bench. Shouldn't be to hard to find one in the $110-120 range.

I have the Competition Electronics unit but I agree the Chrony is the best bag for the buck.

Woody this one only records one shot string up to 32 so if your going to shot multiple rifles or multiple loads in the same rifle at the same outing you may want the beta master as it will record and remember 6 strings of 5. If you go with the alpha the work around would be to clear it for each rifle or load but you will have to save the date to a log book if you want to look at it later. Steve

I've go the F1, but used an Oehler 35P a number of years ago for an extended length of time. I really liked the 3rd check screen.
When one came up on e-bay I bought it. The further apart the screens, the more accurate it is.
Not knowing what Woody wants to use it for, I'd look for a refurbished Chrony or a new CED. I don't know if Chrony still sells refurbished units.
FYI, they don't work with fluroescent lights, you have to use incandescent ones.
If you're going to test a muzzleloader or slug gun, build some sort of protective screen to shoot thru. The sabot can (and will) kill the chrono just as fast as a bullet.

Dad had been asking over the last week if my birthday/Christmas package had arrived yet. Finally got here today in a Midway box. By the size and heft of it I couldn't quite tell what it was... F1 Chrony and a tripod to go with. Thanks, pop! The pic isn't all that great, my decent camera is at work, had to use my cell for a picture...

I use one just like it and the F1 has served me well for several years. Ive shot arrows and bullets over it. If you plan on shooting a muzzle loader over it make sure you make a shield that will deflect the sabots downward or you will end up with a hole in the front and dont ask me how I know this......plus wipe the unit down or it will rust up shooting BP or BP subs, again dont ask me how I know this. Good luck, h.h.

Took it to the range today and used it for the first time. It was a bit cold out, the thermometer I saw said 31 when I left the range but it felt colder than that. Ran some loads over it from my 7 TCU Contender, AR and my 9mm Kahr. The TCU was running as fast (or faster) than I had hoped. 120 grain V-max around 2000 fps. Not bad out of a 10 inch barrel. The AR was slower than I expected, running around 2700 fps. I had expected closer to 3000 fps... The 2 different loads from the Kahr were the same powder charge, just different bullets. The Berry's plated bullets I ran through first were averaging around 980 fps, the Remington Golden Sabre were over 990. Interesting results since both bullets are supposed to weigh the same. The only issue I had with the chrony was with the first shot out of the AR. Came up with an error message. I didn't move the chrony or my rest beween the TCU and the AR so I figured it should have been OK. I made an adjustment to the chrony after the first shot through the AR and it was fine after that. All in all, I'm happy with it!
