Have a Leupold 2-7x on my Ruger 77/17 and it does really well. I prefer to concentrate more on clarity of optics than on magnification.
I have a Burris 3-9x on my .308 pistol barrel and when I shoot at 300 yards with it I rarely go over 5x or 6x and am WELL within the accuracy needed for deer at that range. After only 6 years of practice, off the bench, I can keep all the shots in a 5" target at that range.
For squirrels, you may like more magnification, but it is not necessary if you will be shooting under 150 yards.

2 x 7 should be plenty for the .17 ballistics.

I use a 3 x 9 ..... but would like to upgrade. The better the scope on this lil rifle the better you will like it .... right now we place bets on shooting out coon ....

I put a Leupold 3 x 9 target dot on mine. Now all I need to do is get to the range and zero it.

I use a 3-9x40 on mine. I drop a 3 shot group inside a dime at 50 yards. It makes it real fun to pick witch nostral I'm gong to shoot.
Test your zero at longer rangers. I found my group raises almost 3 inches at 100 yards.
