I noticed a lot of exceptionally small squirrels on the way to work this morning. I think the numbers are going to be up a little more next season. They have plenty of mast to work on, thats for sure.

I have hardly seen the 2 tree rats that keep acorns cleaned-up under my red oaks during the winter & spring. They must still be working on my neighbors black walnut trees.

The Squirrel numbers should be up this comming season due to the extra large mast crop we had in 2005.

I haven't seen a lot of squirrels this past year , but the ones that I've seen were very fat and looked like they were ready to breed us a bumper crop of young 'uns this Summer . I can't wait , my place is busting with nut trees , this year should rock !

I haven’t squirrel hunted in years. It`s sad too, squirrel hunting was how I cut my teeth on hunting. I didn`t start hunting until I was 18. I had an older brother who hunted, but he was out of the house and raising a family before I was really old enough to hunt. I`m not sure where the desire to hunt came from, but it was there. I worked at the old Emroe Sporting goods downtown, and when I was 18, I bought my first ever shotgun. A Winchester 1200, which I still have today. “Way back then”, shotguns didn`t have interchangeable chokes, and the one I bought was a full choke. I spent 3 seasons, with only my Outdoor Life subscription as a teacher, learning to squirrel hunt in a small woodlot near New Palestine before I killed my first ever squirrel. I was so proud of that big `ol fox squirrel. I had a lifetime subscription to Indiana Fins and Feathers, and I just loved reading Bayou Bill Scifres stories about squirrel hunting, mushroom hunting, smallmouth fishing, all the great stuff he knew about and did. I still today believe he is one of the most knowledgeable and influential people to ever hunt and write about the Indiana outdoors. And I was a ferocious squirrel hunter. I sat out in 20 below zero weather in December, just for a crack at the makin`s of squirrel and gravy. It wasn`t long at all before I acquired my next long arm; a Remington model 552, “Speedmaster” semiautomatic .22 rifle. I still have that rifle to this day as well, and man, did I ever kill a lot of squirrels with that wonderful old rifle. I became great friends with a fellow named Joe Kattau, and Joe had a hunter’s heart too. Joe was primarily a rabbit hunter, and hunt rabbits we did. We were the dogs, and once we got a rabbit up at one of the old railroad tracks we hunted, we stayed on it until we either killed it, or it holed up. I was still mainly a squirrel hunter, but Joe just loved the cottontails, and so we went. There are several great stories I could tell about some of my hunts with Mr. Kattau. Sadly, he now resides in Minnesota; he wound up there pursuing his career. We still talk occasionally, but it`s hardly the same.
I do ramble I guess. All I really meant to say, was that, I left the squirrels behind as I began a love affair with the white-tails that are so numerous now in Indiana. That and the Eastern Turkeys, and the pheasants and quail too. But this August, just like in years past, when most other hunters complain it`s too hot to be in the squirrel woods, I may just load up my little Speedmaster, and hit the hickory ridges, lookin for the makin`s of squirrel and gravy. Here’s to you Mr. Kattau

Hey there Hunter. Your tail of hunting and mine are pretty much the same. Although I did go rabbit hunting at about 8 to 10 years old. I was the dog. I busted the brush while my dad stood on the railroad tracks and waited for the rabbit to flush. My first shotgun was dad's old model 12 full choke. Sat under a lot of trees waiting for Mr Bushy to show himself. I did not deer hunt until 1970 when some guys I worked with talked me into getting a recurve bow in 1969 and learning how to shoot it. My first deer hunt was in Oct of 1970. How can I be sure? Simple I got married in Sept. no I do not want to discuss how well that went over. Pretty much quit squirrel hunting by 75 because no one but me wanted to eat them. But if the Lord lets me be able maybe I will dig out a 22 and go this fall. Until deer season opens that is.

MOre squirrels for me to eat. I love going. The challenge of slipping up on them quietly gets me going just as well as a big buck running a ridge right toward me. Love it.

The best ever year I've seen for Squirrel Hunting was back in 1975. The worse year was back in 1981 when some sort of pest infected the hickory & acorn crops here in the SW part of Indiana.

If the squirrels around my house are any indication there will be tons. I have seen 4 big ones and a bunch of juvies around. Unfortunately I live in town where they are more of a pest than anything else. They love nothing more than digging in my yard and chewing on my house (cedar siding).
