Ok......I'm not really "experienced" with slug kills. Most my 68 deer were with my bows or 54 cal Renegade with 540 grain TC maxi hunters that took nothing short of a freight train to stop them.
Shot the buck posted on deer hunting with a 20 ga Wincherster foster slug and while it hit where I wanted (shoulder peak, downward angle at about 25 feet from my gun barrel....yish) I was a bit APPAULED at the lack of blood.
Why? It never went through!!
The buck was packing that shoulder taking off, down at 50 yards and down for good at 100......I was geeking out pretty hard that he went that far.
While not the whiz bang super slugs sold today, the Foster types obviously work and Ive butchered literally hundreds shot with them but thought I'd just post this to let others know...... just because there is no blood, look anyway.
They dont always go through!!
Big bone hit and it obviously shrapneled apart and worked fine but I was a bit amazed anywhooooo.
God Bless

20 ga. foster slugs have barely enough power to make one hole, and will hardly ever go out the other side. The slug will flatten being very soft lead and further slow the penatration down. Even with a better quality slug, stay behind the shoulder.

Partially agree (no offense) and feel the lower weight (versus being lead) is more the culprit but with a firearm?.........the shoulders are coming out if at all possible.
In my area......if the deer runs much at all.......youll be arguing with "who killed it".
Agree there are better slugs but foster's definately work and not shoulder hits may work as well being lead. I was just amazed that at 20 feet or so from my gun barrel it still didnt.
The maxi hunters are going to be my preference. At an ounce and a quarter in weight.....literally they are unstopable by anything in a deer......even end to end.
Slow as they are........ they just flat dont stop. Too bad TC stopped making that weight but I bought several boxes.
Still taking the slugger out for a doe or two when no one else is in the woods.
No disrespect meant and appreciate the reply. I'm a bit old fashioned (a bit? LOL) and I'm not paying 5 bucks a round for "super slugs". The cost of things is rediculous anymore.
Didnt do what I THOUGHT it would but the buck died quickly and while he went further than I would have thought it was due more to (IMHO) the fact that the extreme angle just got one lung?? But it was pulverized.
Ill take your advice on does and go off shoulder to give em a try if far enough from property boundaries. If anything goes East far...........It's a sucker to get permission to go get them. They obviously open up fast and a good thing for lung shots IMO.....should work almost as fast?
God Bless

Several years ago (I think he said '92) my Dad shot a buck that field dressed at 180 lbs at 25 to 30 yards with a 12 gauge rifled slug. The buck was quartering to him and he drilled the on-side shoulder. We found the slug just under the hide on the opposite side. The buck dropped dead on the spot. The recovered slug looked just like a donut; hole completely through the middle. The 12 gauge foster slug had literally turned wrong-side out.
I have shot two deer with slugs and then turned to hunting with muzzleloaders (better accuracy and longer range) exclusively until Indiana adopted their rifle regulations.

Try Brenekke KO slugs. They shoot well and are relatively cheap. About 5.00 a box. They will absolutely make two holes. But a better idea is buy a 44 mag rifle and don't look back.
