Thinking of putting a XS Ghost Ring sight on my Cabelas .54 cal Hawken-style muzzleloader. Looking for thoughts/opinions/other suggestions. Thanks!

Wow they are proud of those sites. They look like they are very high quality though. Do they offer sites for your rifle? The problem mounting sites is the thin wall at the breech-barrel-threads. You need to be very careful drilling and tapping in that area, as in use of a mill or a high quality drill press. Lyman makes a site but it is pricey too. I think it would need one hole tapped into the tang. I have seen this added to TC hawkens, Renegades, Lyman plains etc. They look like you could get a low front site to go along with them. Change the aperture and you will be good to go. Link to one Lyman source. www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=14&subId=167&styleId=770&partNum=RS-57-SMLTC used to make one too for the Hawken, don't know if it is still available.

Website says it does not require any additional drilling or gun smithing. They get really good review from Randy Smith on Chuck Hawks' website, but I was hoping to hear from someone with direct experience before even considering spending $90 on this. www.chuckhawks.com/sights_scopes.htmThanks for the info. I was looking at the Lyman sights as well.

I mounted a peep on my wife's rifle with a mount I made. It set low enough to use the lowest Lyman globe front site, works great. I know of others that have the regular Lyman and they shot good scores with it. I think you have to drill and tap the tang to use them though. With out having one of the XS for your rifle to look at I really can't be of much help. My only concern with using the rear site screws would be the amount of leverage a bump to the breech end would have. You could always Epoxy them for more support. Can you remove the barrel without removing the sites?
