For traditional hammer guns, my preference is 54 cal over 45 or even 50. For an in-line I'd go with a 50. I shoot a 50 cal, 350 grain conical in my in-line and it puts the hurt on deer. A 45 cal will kill deer too, but with muzzleloading full penetration and reasonably large entrance/exit holes are important.
There are quite a few guys that are getting really good performance from magnum 45 caliber guns, but these are not run of the mill guns.
You will find that all accessories are by far more available for 50 cal, so if you're deciding what caliber to buy, makes more sense to go with a 50.

It does make more sense to go with a 50, but I have a 45 TC Encore. I can tell you there is 1 doe that did not like being on the receiving end at all.

My next gun is going to be a new .45 barrel for my savage. As soon as I figure out how to have it done.
The .50 is good, but a good smokeless .45 is better, IMO.

I have shot a TC Encore in .45 for about 6 years and love it. As I understand it the pre 2002 models of the inline .45's aren't worth a hoot due to the 1:20 rate of twist that they were initially manufactured with. 2002 and later most manufacturers realized their mistake and switched to the standard 1:28 ROT. My gun really likes Hornday set over 110 gr of BH 209 and W209 primers. and Ive not met a deer that can handle it. The .05 difference in bullet diameter will make little difference in entrance or exit holes and ballistically the .45's are superior to the .50 but like hoyt said it is much easier to find accessories for the .50 but as long as I can get them I won't trade. Here's a picture of how mine shot this year. The 2 inner are 100yd shots and the 2 strays are from 150yd.

Gobblestopper, it's easy to swap barrels. Send me a PM and I can walk you thru it.

The first deer I ever shot was with a 45 cal. Kentucky rifle. I still have it but it more of a wall decoration anymore. It's very accurate, but those 140 or so grain round balls don't carry a lot of wallop.
If I were to hunt with it today I would limit the range to 75 or so yards.
Having said that, modern guns with modern loads are quite adequate in .45.

Currently both my savages are fitted with the factory .50 barrels but Easton whispered in my ear he really thinks a pacnor in .45 is the way to go.
So......plan on ordering one and having it ready by next year. Don't want to disappoint the lil guy.
