Last night I went out but couldn't decide where to go. Decided after about a half an hour sitting on the 4wheeler I decided to hunt over a standing corn field at the backside of our property. Climbed up over several fresh scrapes not really expecting to see anything. Playing games on the phone with grunt call in my mouth just messing around blowing it every once in awhile. All of a sudden I hear noise coming behind me down the valley. Look back and its a really nice 10 pointer. I stand up real quick and grab my bow. In the mean time he stops in mid stride and makes a scrape. Walking perfectlly down the trail to pre ranged spot. 40 yards I draw back he keeps walking. 30 yards he stops and I settle the pin in and touch the trigger and.....crack. #@!$!!! I hit the shoulder. He ran about 5 yards before the arrow fell out. He had a circle and stopped 53 yards out. I watched him for about a minute and decided to put another arrow in him. Here is where all the practice at 60 and 70 yards will come into play. I drew back and settled my 50 yard pin a little high and touched the trigger and...crack. You got to be kidding me. Center punched the shoulder again. He only ran about 5 yards and stood around for maybe 2 minutes and bedded down. I watched him through my binocs for at least 30 minutes. Never layed his head down. Anyway its getting dark so i have to climb down. As im climbing down i keep calling on the grunt call thinking he will think its a deer making the noise. I hear him stand up and cough. Of course he is laying between me and the 4 wheeler so off to walking I go. 3 miles later I get back to camp.
Go into town and call Duff and Indy and both tell me he's laying dead. Pick my spirits up and make me feel a little better.
3 hours of sleep I go look for him first thing this morning. I find the first arrow and its broken off. Got about 18 inches of penetration. I stalk to where I last seen him and nothing. I walk up to the top of the ridge and nothing. Okay Im not going to push this deer. I decide to head back and call a dog. As im walking back down the ridge I look over and there he lay. Same spot but he was back in the thicket a little. Both shots were 2 inches apart. All I could find was one puncture in one lung when i dressed him out. First shot through one shoulder and lodged in the other. 2nd just went through the shoulder and hit???
What was interesting from the time i left and the time I found him he had stood up and made a huge scrape before he laid down and died. Wonder if it was me hitting the grunt as I walked out. Just took him to the meat cutter. 205lbs on the nose. As soon as I figure out how I'll post some pictures. Sorry so long. Thought some might find it interesting and maybe learn from my mistake. Definatlly when in doubt back out.
Thanks guys for calming me down and raising my hopes that i would find him. Now all we have to do is get ya all one this weekend when you come down.
