Well we called Rock River and low and behold they had a 458 upper in stock and ready to ship. So I ordered it.
Anyone shooting one of these ? I plan on building it for my pops as a deer gun for next year

A guy in my area has one that I saw at the range last year. He said that brass and ammo is expensive and recoil was bad enough to warrant an upgrade to a Magpul buttstock. He also said he had initial problems with his handloads until switching to Winchester large rifle primers. Good luck!

My opinion is that the .458 SOCOM is the perfect Indiana deer cartridge, especially in the AR series of rifles. It is a 150 yard point blank rifle when properly sighted in. Just put the crosshairs on the deer's chest and do your part as a rifleman. I have taken three deer with this caliber/rifle combo in the last two years. All three deer dropped in their tracks. My handloaded 300 gr. Remington JHP loads run me just over $11.00/box of twenty. Here is a 100 yard three shot group from a couple years back. I duplicated this effort this past Wednesday with a five shot group, but haven't yet uploaded the photo. Here is last year's buck. And here is the performance on one of two deer taken in 2009. This is the exit wound. Get that gun up and running. Your dad will love it, that is unless you renege on the deal and keep the rifle for yourself.

the rounds I am shooting are being made by Andrew at Profire they are 100 for 200 325 grain ballistic tip. So far I am very impressed with it. I shot 40 rounds getting it sighted in and comfortable with it. Holy crap my shoulder was sore

Any other news about the .458 socom ? I just recently purchased an upper and was going to look into reloading. Also how bad is the recoil?

You can also use the Ace Skeleton stock with an Endine buffer if using the Carbine length. I shoot 300 grain bullets and it's less kick than a 20 ga. with 3" sabot slugs.
I hand load and it's not problem to get clover leafs with this round at 100 yards.
Check out .458 Socom forum.
