I need the help of anyone living near Madison. There is a move afoot to effectively ban the shooting of archery equipment in the city of Madison.I need help to spread the word on other sites as well as to hunters that you might know who live in Madison.
The proposed rules would make it nearly impossible to shoot in your yard, no matter the logistics, or hunt if there is another urban season.
Examples:
. No shooting within 150 feet of a property line. .No 3-D targets.
. Required backstop; an 8 foot earthen bank, shoot inside a building that an arrow cannot pierce, or shoot in an "adequately" wooded or agricultural area.
. No shooting more than 90 feet from the target.
. Must shoot parallel to the target
. No hunting on any property unless ten or more acres. ( a threat to any future urban seasons )
Second reading and public hearing will be Nov. 9th.What we need to do is:
If you live in Madison, ( I don't) attend the meeting to voice POLITE and LOGICAL objections to this measure.
If you live near Madison, tell hunters you know that DO live in Madison.
If you are on other forums that might be read by hunters in this area, please re-post this info on those sites.
This all stems from a complaint by someone that 'didn't feel safe in her garden' because her neighbors were shooting bows and arrows. If there was a real safety issue, why could the police not have dealt with it?
The addition of the 10 acre hunting restriction makes me strongly suspect there is an animal rights agenda at work here. Many towns already have such restrictions; this does not mean another town needs it.
Please help spread the word.
Thanks,
Sasquatch.

with what I read in the paper just now, the 10 acre thing should be reduced, every thing else I believe could be worked out to satisfy the lady that objected to a kid shooting at a ball rolled across a yard in a neighborhood.. A little common sence should have been used.. I THINK IMO

A little common sence should have been used.. I THINK IMO I can see if they were being careless.... but again, shooting in the direction of people is illegal regardless of ordinances. Why not the cops? We weren't there, so we can't really know. You know that there are many places in madison where it would be unsafe to shoot....and many where it would be fine. But if they pass this stupid thing you couldn't shoot hardly anywhere. 150 feet from any property line? most lots aren't big enough to do that. Think about that...if you are 150 feet from a line in any direction, that's a huge lot! Someone on a tiny lot near the edge of town with one of those steep hillsides that a nuke couldn't penetrate couldn't legally shoot. Eight foot earthen wall? Arrow proof building? I can't see taking any of it as is. It will only get worse.

I said I thot that it could be worked out.. what is ask for and what is got are two different things how many times have you bounced an arrow off the top of a 3-d target and never found the arrow ?? I dont see anything wrong with a 8 ft fence in a situation like that.. I also Said a little common sense should have been used, Like shooting in a hill an arrow could very well bounce off a ball and go anywhere .think about that and the 3-d

Reminds me of a situation that just happen to me last weekend. Neighbor was shooting his bow in his back yard towards my yard. My 4 younger kids were out playing, when I heard one of his arrows hit the privacy fence he was using as a backstop. I had to go out and tell a 40 yr old dumb*ss to stop shooting his bow towards my yard while my kids were out. He thought I was kidding. Then I told him the second time that a 45 round would be heading his direction the next time. He finally got a clue. Oh, by the way, I have 2 of his arrows that have made it through the fence. If people would just use common sense, this kind of thing wouldn't come up.

I read that tonight. It was probably my neighbors that called the police lol. I was shooting off of my roof into my fenced 7 foot high back yard into a target. Behind my fence is my yard then woods.

James I have to disagree. The majority of gun owners are responsible, yet there are new gun laws proposed every day. Common sense sure kept gun laws away. I suppose people shooting in their yard is why Chicago banned handguns? Obviously, that guy shouldn't shoot toward your kids. That said, we can't let one or two morons get a ban passed for an entire town. C'mon people. I post a warning about an impending archery ban on a hunting forum and the only responses think it's a good thing? Your city today, Your county tomorrow. How long before one guy somewhere out in Incorporated land shoots a shed or something and there are county-wide restrictions proposed?

I think the problem is the fact that it is in town therefore restrictive as to size of lots, which limits the space you have to safely "practice". And it only takes a moron or two to ruin weapon ownership anywhere, or kill a innocent person. If I knew someone in Madison I would be happy to pass this along, however I do not. If the DNR designates a area as urban hunting, can that city council ban archery? Seems that the DNR would have the say in that?

If this passes it would ensure Madison could never again be an Urban zone again. This part of the proposal and the one requiring level shooting ( bans tree stand shooting...see how clever that is) Convinces me that there is more to this than bow shooting. I would ask the people of Madison, which is more likely to happen....a person hitting a deer & getting injured or a person getting hit by an arrow?

I'm not in Madison, but my property is 10 acres. 330' wide by 1320' long.
The way the proposal is written I could only hunt in the center strip of land that was 30' wide.
Total BS.

This law is obviously written by some one with an agenda that doesn,t have a clue.
Example
"Must shoot parallel to the target"
You would never hit the target except in the side. You should shoot perpandicular to the target face.

One more reason I chose to live in the country. There is much I have to put up with and do without because of it. For me, it is worth it. Good luck with those city councils. I am interested in the outcome.
