Any body got a list of contacts where a deer tracking dog could be rented? Maybe we could get this service listed by county? I have no clue where to even start to look for one. It might save some hunter some real grief as per the recent threads on this forum.

ok .... this dog tracking thing has me curious.
Are there any "must do's" when thinking of getting a dog to track?
must take up the trail within a certain number of hours? Must have actual blood to track by?
I am assuming the dogs track by scent of blood and not of deer? Right?
I admit I am skeptical .... we called in a dog two years ago to track a deer a buddy shot and that dog was as worthless as a football bat.

MUST mind you, the hours are not as important as dont walk over every square in of a hundred acres and then call . dont use a deer crazie dog. use one that just looks at a deer and says whats the big deal its just a deer?? the dog tracks A DEER not all deer, Must tell the difference My Dog knows what I want .yours needs to also Kippie the one that owns me now is gorgie/beagle/ jack russel .My others were Blue heelers

aahh ... so it tracks just like the bloodhounds we see in the movies. Give them a pair of old underwear the deer was wearing and the dog will find THAT deer based in its unique scent.
yeah, the dog we tried was not trained like that.

Are there any "must do's" when thinking of getting a dog to track? Start saving deer blood. Freeze it for training.
must take up the trail within a certain number of hours? No, they can smell dead long after the day of the shot
Must have actual blood to track by? No, but it helps. When I had Tims dog at the youth hunt last year, she found pin head specks that we didn't see and picked up the direction when we had assumed the deer went the other way.
I am assuming the dogs track by scent of blood and not of deer? Right? The can do both, train with blood and interdigital scent
Use a tennis ball, put the blood or scent on it and have the pup fetch. Reward good behavior. Always use a harness but only put it on when the dog needs to be thinking find the deer dead.

Timex - was talking about calling a tracking dog in. Not getting my own dog.
I have lost a good buck or two in the past and if there is a better than average chance that a dog will find a deer I will call one in next time.
Was just wondering if there was a check list that i could do ahead of time to increase the chances of the dogs success.

10-4 Tim is your man. Try him as soon as the track gets tough. When he came to us, we had tracked the deer well over a mile though plowed ground, very slow going. When we lost the blood, the deer had made a 90 degree turn in a spot that it shouldn't have. The dog found several micro spots of blood after we couldn't. This deer ended up back near to where it was when shot, and was not recovered. Don't believe that it died, at least that day. Tim's dog has found a few 4-5 days after the fact.
