Got nine days to take off for archery season. Help me burn em up. What do you think would be the best times to take off work and be in the woods. Hunting for a buck. Will fill the doe tags on the weekends during gun season. I have always taken off the first week of november. Hunting washington county. Looking for your thoughts on the best time to kill a mature buck...ie pre rut. Best chace and good time to rattle. I have done good that time of year but wanted your thoughts if im hitting it a little early.

What part of the state are you hunting? Here in north central Indiana the big boys come to the rattling last week of October first week of November. Normally around here by November 7th or so, the very first smelly estrous does have the dominant bucks close behind them with only one thing in mind which is getting that very first piece of action since last breeding season. I've had the best luck rattling the few days before and a few days after Halloween.

If you have 9 days ... and you want to spend them all archery hunting (before gun season comes in) .... you need to take the 9 days before gun opener.
I will be in the woods every second I can be from October 25 until November 11.

9 days - Put in for October 29th through November 10th. That will give you one day to catch your breath before the November 12th gun opener..
Good luck...

I agree with Woody. My last 5 bucks, all 3.5 - 4.5 years old were killed between Halloween and Nov. 7th. That is a special time to be in the woods.

Thats when I have taken off in the passed years. Wanted to see if anyone had any other thoughts. You all sit all day then? I have during the rut. Haven't had much luck seeing anything that time of the year during midday with it being the search period. Don't know. Maybe just hunting wrong areas. Just had luck morning and evening rattling. Woody...I guess might as well take the tenth day too and hunt all the way through opening weekend. Just going to have to call in sick. Wonder if they"ll believe that one. Don't know why but I was thinking gun opened the next weekend.

I know most of the BIG bucks killed from Newport that time of the year all came around lunch time.

First week november for sure. I'm hunting alittle now but waiting for MAGIC TIME which for me in south eastern Indiana is Oct 25--Nov 15. Killed 90% of my buck's during this time. Just buying my time right now. Hunting alittle, watching deer behavior, and gearing up for pre rut and early rut. That's when I will be in my treestand's.

I like Oct 27th thru Nov 7th, Seems like a lot of people are in the woods after that scouting and putting up stands for gun season stirring them up. Unless you have private ground. But pretty much every day after Oct 27th is great.
