I just read that 1% of the deer last year in Indiana were taken with a handgun! I had no clue that so few of us handgun hunters were around and actively pursuing the sport. Makes me enjoy even it more though. Anyone out there been thinking about giving it a try this season?

I'll have one or more of them out at some point; hard telling what it will be though.

I've hunted successfully with a Savage Striker in .243, as well as S&W .44 mag, but since the PCRs have become legal I've used them.
I may try handguns again. That would mean buying a new gun.
But, wouldn't that help the economy?

The .243 was a great shooter, as most Savage firearms are, it would shoot sub moa with most loads, seemed to prefer 70-80 grainers.
I had a nice 2.5x7 Burris scope that seemed to be a good match for it.
It was fun to shoot at the range, but was pretty unwieldy in the woods.

I have taken deer with a few different handguns. First was a 4 5/8 barreled Blackhawk in .357 (borrowed), then a .30/30 Contender (borrowed), then used a 7 1/2 barreled Blackhawk in .45 Colt for several years (just sold it this spring), and most recently with my new .308 Encore. I REALLY like that .308! If I am carrying a long gun and a pistol, I automatically reach for the long gun. To actually use the pistol as the primary weapon, I have to take it by itself.

I havent been in the one percent club for 2 years now. Last deer I took with a hand cannon was a nice 10 pointer with a Savage Striker .260 Rem using 120 Nosler BT. The Ballistic Tip made up for a poor shot. h.h.

I have taken 7 deer over the years with a handgun. I wish I could still use one, but vision problems have made me switch to a TC Encore .44 mag rifle.

I haven't had the equipment to be in 1% until this year and yeah Omega-I REALLY like my 308 Encore!!!!
Had some more fun with this last weekend when I had the Scouts over for their annual "Projectile Day" (archery, tomahawks, spears, blackpowder, pistol, revolver, shotgun, highpower, etc.) Got tired of watching them trying to bust open a punkin on the pistol range so occasionally I'd have to go over and show them how to blow one up! Then lined up a few of them on 200 yard range and showed them what kind of range it had too. I kind of surprised though that not a whole lot them wanted to try shooting it.

Muzzle blast (even with hearing protection on) deters many from giving it a go.
I have not had a chance to really wring mine out the way you have yours! I shot Hornady 150 SP through it last year with really good success, but switched to the 150 SST (supposedly expand even faster) and still trying to decide if I am getting as good of groups as with the 150 SP.
Mine has a really long throat in it and I have my bullets seated way out. Not sure that the big boat-tail on the SST is good for that. Trying to get in some range time, but the daughter has soccer practice, games, we have other commitments, ... the list never ends.

The muzzle blast from shooting that 10 pointer is the reason I sold the Striker. It had a muzzle brake on it and when I shot the blast bounced off the tree trunk and made my left ear ring for 3 months or more. I decided it was time for that gun to go. If I had it to do over I would have bought a good pair or electronic hearing protectors that amplify sound and stop muzzle noise. h.h.

Several years back, I had a Taurus Tracker in .41 mag that was factory ported. I once shot a coyote with it and my left ear wasn't right for a long time. Since then I have avoided muzzle breaks on pistols like the plague...

I'm surpised, too! Only 1%?? That just seems so low to me. I took a doe with my Ruger GP100 (.357, SS, 4") last year and plan to carry the same this year.

I'm surpised, too! Only 1%?? That just seems so low to me. I got this info from the current Indiana Game & Fish magazine at the bottom of page 26, where it says "diverse hunters, diverse methods." 2010 Indiana Deer Harvest by Method46% - shotgun 25% - muzzleloader 20% - bow 7% - rifle 1% - handgun 1% - crossbow
