Who better to ask than died in the wool squirrel hunters - What does the mast look like this year?
I know that the squirrels are tearing up my two pecan trees in the back yard.

Walnuts everywhere here, Hickory seems to be sparse and acorns are small.

Buckeyes and walnuts are loaded, but relatively small. Hickory look about average but small. Oaks are loaded up but again small. I have yet to find a beach with nuts at all.

A buddy at work, who lives in east-central Illinois, was telling me yesterday that his shag bark hickory's didn't produce at all this year. I checked ours this morning and it was the same thing; not a nut.
Anyone else experiencing this??

Lots of pine cones, usually means good squirrel hunting when they start cutting. Fairly good acorns here. Squirrels are really busy in the corn fields where available.

I have not seen any squirrels cutting hickories (shag or pignut) where I have been hunting. Nice big acorns are being hit hard and starting to cut on walnuts.

I took Johnny out today first time I've been out in the back in a good while - plenty of acorns and they are big too. Squirrels were not active at all, Johnny missed 1, I got 1 and missed 1. We did see 5 turkeys.

Finally found a hickory this past weekend with nuts and the squirrels were piled on it. Took 3 fox squirrels out of that one tree. The tree sits right on the edge of a natural spring. My guess is that most of the hickories did not get sufficient water at the right time and this one was getting water all the time.
