Not anymore. Now, I'm just majorly overweight!
A few weeks ago, I had to complete a health assessment for our insurance coverage. Every matrix they tested shows I'm healthy as a horse (cholesterols, triglycerides, glucose, blood pressure, etc.). But my BMI (Body Mass Index) was crazy. It classified me as obese. Seriously? OK, I'm 6'4" and weighed in at 242 lbs. Yeah - I'm no skinny minny - but OBESE! Give me a break.
So, I decided to get a little more exercise and watch the ice cream at night. Now, I'm down to 235 lbs. Wow - I've just slid under the obese bar.
Here's the crazier deal - I've only got to lose 31 more lbs to be considered normal. Probably not gonna happen. I never aspired to be NORMAL anyway ;D ;D!
Who makes these charts up?

Oh, dont feel so bad. I'm morbidly obese according to the last one I saw. To make it to mornal I need to drop 100 pounds. Now I realize that my mid section needs a great deal of attention, but the other 70 pounds is going to be a real struggle to lose.

The charts are useless because they depend on hieght. Evander Holyfield was, by the chart, considered obese at his fighting wieght.

5'6" and 235, I'm pretty sure I'm not in the normal range either. I would like to get below 200, but I enjoy eating too much.

According to the chart I just looked at, I'm right where I should be,............ if I was 6' 5".
Guess I need to get taller!

There ya go parson we all just need to hit that last growth spurt and we'll be normal weight! Ha. I'm just like you scrub buster. 5'6'' and 230-240 depending on the week. I too would like to be around 190 like when I was 20 years old. I've got a feeling that I'll never read those numbers under my feet again.

I too would be in the morbidly obese range. I am 5'11" and weigh in at 330. I hate my weight but have always struggled with it. I would love to lose it but losing it easy for me. It is the keeping it off that I struggle with the most. I am going to try again and see what happens. I wish you all luck if you decide to lose the weight and hopefully I can do it as well.

I'm 5'6" and 175 lbs. According to the charts I'm overwieght. Normal would be something like 120 -160 lbs. I would be happy to drop 15 - 20 lbs. But 120 lb is normal? I graduated HS at 130 lbs, was very fit and had <10% body fat. I played soccer my freshman in year and college and still barely cracked 130 lbs.
The charts are skewed against anyone that has any muscel mass. Michael Jordon was "obese" during his NBA days.

Well I just visited the Golden Corral today so don't think I will be losing any anytime soon. Doubt if the Blizzard I had on the way home helped either.

I'm about 6' 2" and I'm hovering around 200 or so, but I've been down as low as 195 in recent weeks. During the winter I'll get up to 210-215...
If I've grown in height at all since high school, it certainly hasn't been much. That was 14 years ago, and I believe I was about 195 then. By the time I started at Purdue that fall, I was down to 180.... I know my body structure has changed since then and there is no way I could get my weight down that low and still be able to do my normal work on a daily basis!

I found out today through some coworkers that the plan is to require the employee to pass all parameters of the health assessment by 2014 to qualify for "premium" coverage. I haven't seen anything in print yet, but one of the sources is our V.P. of Operations. So there must be some validity - just no details yet.

After a very slight stroke 5 years ago I have tried to keep my weight in check, but I'm still about 20# more than I ought to be. My big challenge is that I can stay busy and still not get much physical exercise.
Just this morning I was thinking about the fact that November is rapidly approaching, and I need to get in deer-dragging shape!
Speaking of getting in shape" "O" is a shape, isn't it?

FYI for all you guys (and gals). You can calculate your ideal body weight (IBW) by using the equations below. If you are a small-framed person you should multiply the final number by .9 and if you are a large-framed person you should multiply by 1.1. Also, these equations will give you IBW in kilograms, so you simply multiply by 2.2 to convert to pounds. Obviously these equations and definitions are far from perfect, especially at the individual level. The reason these definitions exist is because it has been shown consistently that people who have a BMI of between 25 and 29.9 (overweight) and greater than 30 (obese) have an increased risk for chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer compared to people with a BMI below 25. These studies are large-scale and observational so they are really only applicable at the population level (though as you all have pointed out, sometimes docs and insurance companies forget this point). Here are the equations.
IBW in kg for men = 50 kg + 2.3 kg for every inch greater than 5 feet
IBW in kg for women = 45.5 kg + 2.3 for every inch greater than 5 feet
Example: I'm 6'1" so that's 13 inches more than 5 feet. 50 + (2.3 x 13) = 79.9 kg 79.9 kg x 2.2 = 176 pounds. Since I'm medium-framed, there is no additional change. However, if I was small-framed my IBW would be 176 x .9 = 158 lbs and if I was large-framed my IBW would be 176 x 1.1 = 194 lbs.

If i use the straight formula, it puts me at 140 lbs, which is what I weighed when I was 21 and spent the summer in field camp walking and mapping the mountains of southern California all day, everyday ... and was very lean. If i use the 1.1 conversion factor, it puts at 155 - which is near what I would consider my ideal weight - but I wouldn't consider myself large framed.

I often tell people to think of the difference between the straight formula and the +10% as a range. So for you specifically, your range would be 140-155 lbs. The fact that you were around 140 lbs at a time when you were young and very active means that the formula is probably pretty accurate for you. Because, to be honest, I've only met a handful of people in the normal range that weren't VERY physically active. Keep in mind that this formula calculates "ideal" body weight, and obviously can't account for metabolic health (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, ect.). There is a large line of research on the "fit but fat" body type. Don't put too much emphasis on these body weight calculations until you know how metabolically healthy you are.

Im 6'1" and weigh just over 330 lbs. @ 31 yrs old, Im large frame, my "ideal weight" is around 194 lbs. by the calculations, however I dont think I been in the 190's since around 15 or 16 ! I was very active right after high school and was around 225-250 from 18-25. Since then I havent been as active, and since 27 I sustained a verybad back injury which caused me to really slow down almost to a sedentary lifestyle the past few years.
Now that Im over 300 lbs, I have really noticed alot more issues with my bp, cholestrol, unfortuanately diabetes actually runs in my family, luckily I do not have that (yet). I have recently tried to lose weight & get more excercise but its hard with 5 herniated discs in my lumber spine, and what appears to be knee problems now (which I attribute to the excess weight) but Im gettin there !
I started out at 370 lbs the beginnin of the year, so there is progress being made but I have a very long road to go ! I would love to be back around the 230-250 mark, even though its still not considered to be normal, but when I was that weight I was benchin 275 lbs, leg pressin well over 900 lbs and could squat over 400.
Maybe that has also attributed to my knee pain over the years, Im just sayin I dont think I have ever been near my ideal weight in my adulthood. Even though I was very strong, active, and to be fit I was never close to the BMI scale.......Its just not going to fit everyone in there or mean you arent healthy !
Good Luck to you all with your weight loss endeavers, I have recently hit a plateau in my loss and the doctor has tried me on Phentermine, which you take everyday and it truely does help you feel less hungry & gives you a lil extra energy. I was told I can take it up to 6 months to help with the weight loss. However I have known ppl to take it that lost a crap ton of weiht in a 6 month period only to put it back on even faster !
You have to change your eating habits, eat healthier foods in smaller protions, and gettin moving, excercise is the key, or atleast it has been that way for me ! Also I stopped drinkin sodas, I almost always just drink water or sugar free tea, its amazin how much added weight that soda & sugar can put on you over a yrs time !
Good Luck guys & gals & God Bless....... ~INDeerhunter~

5'9" at 192#. I've lost 8# working on Habitat. I'm not too unhappy with that except a pooch of a belly. A few years ago I got down to 175# and several people thought I was sick or had cancer. I Looked a lot older in the face. I'm at a point in my life I want to enjoy it and not worry about being "normal", whatever that is.
