Has anyone ever tried a red dot sight on a handgun hunting rig?

I have one on my 8" 357Max barrel. I've had it with me a couple of times, never shot anything with it.

I suppose they are OK for plinking, but in general, I think red dot types scopes are pretty crappy optics.

I suppose they are OK for plinking, but in general, I think red dot types scopes are pretty crappy optics. Not if you buy high quality ones. I have one that cost close to $300.00, Bushnell Holo sight and it works good. Cheap dot scopes are junk and usually dont hold up. I was going to put the Holo scope on my 454 Casull but havent. h.h.

You're not that far away; if you want to try it let me know.

I've got one on a T/C Contender .223 and really like it. One of my favorite tractor guns for groundhog & coyotes. What sight are you guys using on your .44's ? Been thinking about one for my Ruger.

Had a cheapo Simmons 30mm red dot on the 7.5 inch Blackhawk .45 that I just parted with not long ago and it did just fine. Wasn't shooting cowboy loads through it either.

IMO, they are OK, but not as good as a scope, low or no magnification and strickly short range.

They are quite adequate for 50-100 yd hunting. If you're looking for a longer range handcannon set up then I would go with a scope as well.

I have a Vortex red dot on my AR pistol and it works very well for what I need it to do. I hope to try it out on a deer this fall.
