Pick up a Boy Scout handbook and look up the information for merit badges and then maybe try some of those activities. Talk to a local scout leader and see if you can get in touch with the merit badge counselors for some of these activities such as fishing, biking, hiking ect. If your Cubs go onto Boy Scouts they will then have a jump on some of these activities should they decide to work toward a rank such as Eagle. By the way THANKS for being involved in scouting.

IMO, Cubs are too young for organized outdoor outings, that comes later with Boy Scouts and Explorers. For Cubs, keep it simple. One suggestion would something such as plaster casts of certain animal tracks, tree identifacation with preserving leaves, or maybe a field trip to a local farm or a short day hike with plenty of adults along through the woods for variety.

WOW, I would never think of doing that! my 8 year old son has been around field dressing and butchering deer (we process all of our deer at home) since he was about 2...he is totally cool with it, just a way of life for him but I would never do that around other kids!! thanks for the ideas I brought in several tanned animal (fox, coyote, beaver, raccoon, skunk, mink, etc) pelts last year to the tiger den meeting--they LOVED it! Might do that again in the pack meeting and have the boys identify the animals ;D ;D First off-Congrats!! May you have a long and successful Scouting experience!! Timex is pretty much on track with his thoughts. You also need to check your "Guide to Safe Scouting"! It will spell out what activities are age appropriate for Cubs. As far as any type of hunting in Scouting activities the Venturing Program is the only one that allows it-that's not to say that a hike through the woods couldn't be used to find and identify animal tracks, the food that the animal eats and where the animal likes to go I will make one observation though-I was (un)fortunate enough to attend one of our local cub packs meetings that was held at one of the leaders houses last fall. This leader thought it would be a good idea to show these young and very impressionable boys how to field dress a deer...but to bring a gut shot (multiple times )doe out that had been sitting in his cooler for a couple of days and expect this to be a positive experience for these kids WHAT WAS HE THINKING I walked away from that meeting knowing that these boys had just lost any interest in hunting due to the smell and general grossness of the whole operation. I know that field dressing is generally a messy affair but this was NOT what these boys that knew nothing about hunting needed to see for the first time! In other words keep the exposure positive until some interest is shown and more questions are asked. Now I'll get off my soapbox...
