I believe and have read that wet spring's can equate to larger buck's in the fall. The above average rain mean's more natural browse for the deer thus larger body weight and rack's. What's everyone's opioion's??? Of course at the rate we are going farmer's will be lucky to get any field crops planted before late May or early June.

I have always believed that good moisture levels is an important ingredient in the head gear receipe.

I would agree that the moisture would create more browse, crop, and mast including a better quality of food for the animals, however with as much rain as we have been gettin and are still believed to get in the next week or so Im not sure that the deer arent going to need boats to get to any food supplies LOL !
If this weather continues I would be surprised if farmers can even get their crops planted as early as June ! Im not sure what the weather has brought where you guys are from but down here next to the Ohio River this rain has caused major flooding. I live about 10 minutes away from the river and from Louisville, Ky. and I dont think I have ever seen this many road closures due to flooding even in the 97' flood !
Hwy 111 which leads from Floyd County IN. to Harrison County IN. near the Horseshoe Casino is unreckonizable as a road at all, it looks like River ! Im talking the road has waves and in some of the low lying areas of it there are some mature trees that are no longer sticking up out of the water. The water level is about 10 ft above flood stage and not said to crest until Friday.
I would say its the worst flooding I have ever seen including the 97' flood. The parking garage at the horseshoe casino is near completely under water and its either four or five levels tall !!
Im just hoping that the flood receeds soon and that the people making a living farming can and do get their crop out in time to have a good harvest not only for their sake and for their families sake but also so we can have a good harvest this hunting season.

I live in Southern Indiana and we've had almost 17" of rain this month.
So...if the deer don't drown......they should have plenty of browse...maybe fewer crops, but it should be a banner year for weeds and browse... ;D

Heard it's the 6th rainiest April on recored for Indiana. Moisture plays a huge part in adding nutrients to the food that deer will eat. So more nutrients healthier deer herd = happy hunters. So yes rain is good, but too much of anything is a bad thing. Let's just hope the the corn is down come mid October.

Heard it's the 6th rainiest April on recored for Indiana. And she aint even over yet! But, yes, I do believe that good growing season for plants, equals good growing season for deer! Come on October! |

Were currently over 12" above normal rainfall down here. My biggest concern is I hope the Hickory & Oaks had time enough to pollinate, before all the rain, so we have enough Mast for the Squirrels this Fall.  |

I think it increases the amount of stress on river bottom bucks. All of my ground is under water and forcing them out of their home. I know late floods wash away the crops in the winter which makes it tough on them. Looks like rain he rest of the week!

There is an area I hunt and its surrounded by a large creek on three sides and then backs up againist the highway. Now it looks like a dang island !! the pond that is one the property has overflown and connected with the creek, pretty much the only thing left outta the water is a large pine thicket so Im sure the deer are artacked in that small lot like dominoes !!
Its a good size piece of land but with all the water and rain and more expected I cant imagine the strain its putting on the deer in that area. its gotta be limiting the food source and Im certain there arent but maybe (if lucky) theres 20 to 25 acres of property that isnt covered with water in there.
Im hoping the rain quits for while so it can all recceed and the deer can go back to being able to browse and move around more. Im not sure how long it will take before that kind of flooding will effect deer season all together.
I just hope after all this rain we dont go to extreme heat and drought ! That will cause evern more problems with the crop this year and Im sure theya re gettin close to being behind schedule getting plots ready as it is !
