Kent Christian's Amanda Sweeney and Christian Academy of Madison's Kenzie Nelson both brought home state championships at the fifth annual Indiana National Archery in Schools Program state finals Friday in Muncie.
Sweeney was the overall state girls champion after an impressive day. She finished runner-up in the girls high school division with a score of 280, losing that championship on a bulls-eye tiebreaker with Union's Andrea Hicks. But in a six-person shoot-off for the overall title, Sweeney came out on top and took home the overall crown.
Nelson won the girls fifth grade division with a score of 263, 11 points better than the runner-up. She finished second among all elementary-age girls. Nelson is the only archer from Christian Academy to qualify for the national tournament in Louisville, Ky., in May.
