Family and I are fine Woody.
We didn't feel the earthquake, as it was so far away. I knew something was up though, since my cell phone stopped working. I couldn't call out to anyone on my work or personal cell phone.
When I got home to my neighborhood, I could hear the PA system warning in Japanese. The tsunami was supposed to hit here at 5:54 p.m. yesterday. I haven't heard any reports of damage here on Okinawa. The situation up on mainland is much worse. It looks like Sendai took the worst of it, which I'm sure you've seen. We were just north of there about 3 weeks ago. I have a friend here who is from Sendai. I haven't been able to talk to him, so I hope his family up there is ok.
Phone calls to mainland are still spotty. My co worker Noriko has been trying to ring her mother in Tokyo, but so far hasn't been able to get through.

More from Chico..
I've been watching Japanese news. They are reporting a bit more of the real situation, but still not the whole story. It's bad.
The GPS monitoring stations on mainland all moved 8 feet on account of the earthquake. Usually tectonic plate movement is measured in inches per year, not feet per minute.
Hope everything is well there. I'll keep you posted

Doing fine. Thanks for the kind thoughts.l
Looks like we had a 30 cm tsunami here. The sea walls are 15-20 feet tall, so everything was fine here.
Kadena is sending folks to help with the recovery efforts. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers because I'm sure the things they are about to see and experience cannot be unseen.
Japan Self Defense Forces has 100,000 personnel on the ground up there now and reports are that they are completely overwhelmed. The first 5 helos we sent are there now, helping with the rescue/recovery effort.

LOL deertracks. No machete. I do have a plan that involves snaring cats with guitar strings if it gets bad. ;D The youth center where I teach Judo opened up the rec area to accept donations on base. I don't think you could fit another box of stuff in there, people have really stepped up to help our host nation. They have so much stuff, they are worried about how they are going to get it up there. Hopefully it finds a KC to fly up on soon.
