Let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of food. I will try just about any food once. This summer my wife and I are are going to drive to the east coast and go from washington d.c. up to boston and a bunch of places in between and along the way. The whole trip is going to revolve around food. I would like to hear about the best places to eat throughout indiana. I will go ahead and start. I live in Columbus, IN and there is a restraunt that opened up a couple months back called amazing joes grill. They have a real "man's man" burger called the forgetaboutit burger (not sure on the spelling) It is a huge burger over 6" tall, It has cheese sticks, steak fries, a fried egg, bacon, bbq sause, 2 different kinds of cheese, onion rings and the burger patty all on it. You get your choice of side with it for $10.99. Probally the best burger I've ever had Also over by batesville there is a small german town called oldenburg. A guy at work got me started on this, but if you go to the grocery store there (there is only 1) and go back to the meat counter they have this stuff called Goetta. Other people call it German Grits. It is kind of like a breakfast sausage but way better, every couple of months I will drive over there and get 5 or 6 pounds of it. You have to take it home and cook it yourself, but it is amazing!!! Definately worth the trip and it is a cool little town to drive around and look at too!!!

Wow! That is a "man's man" burger!
We're constantly on the look out for good places to eat. One of the staples near us is Grey Brother's Cafeteria in Mooresville. Been going to that place since I was a kid. I love their fried chicken livers (my wife and kids can't believe I eat those!). We also go to the Iron Skillet for fried chicken on occasion. We went to a place this summer that was really cool. It was up north, and I think the name was Bonge's....not really sure. Anyway, people "tail gate" out in the parking lot (playing cards, eating snacks, tossing footballs and frisbees) until your table is ready. It's a really small place, but a very fun atmosphere.

Not far, from where I lived in Evansville, there is a restraunt called the Hornet's Nest that is very popular. They have a GREAT Prime Rib! Also, up in Washington, In. There is the White Steamer that serves good burgers. Both places are "Icons" in their locations. Down where I am living now there aren't any good restraunts except for fast food places. You have to go to 'E-town for a good restruant.

Some of my fondest memories go back to a simple little restaurant in New Buffalo, Michigan - Redamak's! Hey featherduster - You might know better - but I believe they're still open except in the winter. I haven't been there for a few years. Great burger and nice little drive for those in northern Indiana since it's just across the border north of La Porte.

Cotton: they are closed for the season, due to reopen in March. They make a good burger but now a days more of a tourist attraction than a good restaurant. My wife and I are Polish and we will travel to POLE TOWN in Chicago a couple times a year. For real good Polish food, I recommend the RED APPLE on north Milwaukee ave.and then when your done eating walk down to ENDY'S Grocery store and bring home a whole bunch more polish food.

In Indy, go to the Heidelberg Haus Cafe and Bakery on Pendleton Pike. They have incredible baked goods and a lunch counter with great, real, German grub. The meat they use comes fro Claus' German Sausage and Meats on South Shelby (It used to be Klemms on South Street, new location but same family-a nephew who got his masters in Sausage making in Germany took it over). They have their own smokehouse their meat is INCREDIBLE,best bacon you will ever eat. As a bonus, they also will smoke and make sausage from your game animals. Here are the websites for above www.clausgermansausageandmeats.com/wildgame.htmlwww.heidelberghaus.com/Guten appetit!!

I travel Indiana quite a bit for work and I have developed quite an extensive list of places to visit depending on where I'm staying. Here's the ones I would recommend most:
The Essen Haus, Odon- Amish buffet, less variety on a given day than others but cheaper and higher quality
Turkey Lake Tavern, Ashley- get the fried cod also try Fish of Stroh in the same area
Snitzelbank, Jasper- best German food in the state, huge salad bar, and good beer
The Mill house, Jasper- go for the pizza lunch buffet and be sure to try the chicken alfredo and buffalo chicken pizzas
China Garden, Southport- best Chinese food in Indy
Cosmos House of Pancakes, Fort Wayne- great for breakfast, try the omelet with pancakes
Casa, Fort Wayne- 5 locations with slightly different names all have great Italian food
Oley's Pizza, Fort Wayne- get the double crust pizza but be warned that 2-3 slices are enough to satisfy all but the biggest appetite.
The Overlook, Leavenworth- very good ribs and a nice view of the Ohio
Bluefin Bistro, Lafayette- most evenings they have all you can eat sushi with a pound of snow crab legs for $25, be sure to call ahead and make sure they are offering this special before you go
Irish Lion, Bloomington- try the stew and soda bread
El Reparo, Brookville, Rushville, Greensburg- Mexican food, try the Super Donkey if you like big burritos
Kelsey's Steakhouse, Valparaiso- Try the prime rib
Matey's, Michigan City- all you can eat fried perch
White Horse Cafe, Rockville- huge tenderloin sandwich
Ru Yi, Columbus- great Asian food
Just Off the Brick, French Lick- I'm not sure if it is still in business but had the best hand tossed pizza in the area.
Black Buggy, Washington- Forget the buffet, just get a coconut cream pie.
Squealers, Mooresville- good BBQ

Mbogo, Turkey Lake Tavern, is actually in Elmira, Indiana. We stopped going there because their prices went up, the fish got skinny, and their portions went down. That's the bad thing about new owners. That used to be my favorite fish place. They have great onion rings.
My hometown favorite place is the West End Restaurant in Decatur. They have great fish, chicken, gizzards, onion rings and homemade pies.
Marco's on Second in Decatur is a fancier, therefore more expensive place, but they have the best burger I've ever had. It was a little over $10 for a burger and hand cut fires, but it was worth it!

To be honest with you, I've only ate there once, and wasn't impressed. A lot of people love it, but I'll pass. People love their buffet, but I don't do buffets (too many years in food service to trust a buffet!). It still seems pretty popular.

I also need to mention Two Brother's Bar/Restaurant in Decatur for their "Big Brother" sandwich, chili and fried cheeseballs. The Big Brother is a hamburger patty, fresh pork sausage patty, swiss, american and onions. It's great!

Mbogo pretty much covered it.
I grew up just outside of Perkinsville where Bonge's bar is. Great food, used to be one heck of a dive before they catered to the Hamilton Co $$$. They made a good call for sure.
Redimacks is pretty good too, my wife is from Hudson Lake and she's dragged me up there a few times!

Ribs, only one place to go. Marcy's in Leopold. Pizza, Just off the bricks in French Lick. Pulled BBQ, Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro Ky. The Overlook has the best view of the river but prefer to eat at the Dock in Old Leavenworth. Great burger at Betty's in Magnet, again along the Ohio River. For Buffet's The Collanade(sp) at the French Lick hotel is hard to beat. For regular Buffet's the Golden Corral at Bedford is always good. Mbogo, the last time we ate at Oden it was terrible. Same with the Black Buggy in Jasper and West Baden. The last two are new so maybe they will get better.
Sure miss the New Orleans House in Indy.

The Beef House in Covington, IN is my favorite.
mbogo: my buddy and I stopped in the White Horse when we went to Deer Processing course at the Parke Co Fairgrounds last fall. We had the Big Dewey (the extra lg tenderloin) and it was pounded so thin and was so dry you couldn't hardly choke it down. Have been there dozens of times before for breakfast and lunch with no issues. Typically lots of food for a great price.

I love the Beef House. We use to have some pre-game meals there when I was in college.
Don't forget the Knaw Bone Tenderloin. It's been in numerous mag. and T.V shows. The original owner just opened it back up.

I love this thread! Good idea! My favorite places are as follows: In Evansville, Yen Ching has the best chinese I've ever had its on south Green River Rd. it's on the left side if you're headed south. Next is The Hill Top Inn it's on the west side fried chicken is good beer is cold. I love The Log Inn it's nortb of Evansville in Warrington just north of I-64 is the turn off of hwy 41 great food chicken is their #1 seller but they do have roast beef and ham steak thats pretty good too it's family style so all the sides you can eat if you leave hungry its your own fault no credit cards here cash or check only the check might even have to be local but I'm not sure on that one. Now down to Kentucky for BB-Q Ralf's on green street in henderson is good but if you have time go to Peak Brothers in Coridon I would consider this the very best in the area! Have fun!
