I have tried everything else to locate toms excepts a good owl call. I know this will work because I have heard the real thing make them shock gobble down south. I'm wondering if any of you have any good suggestions.

I just use the Palmer's Hoot Tube and it works great for me. Nothing fancy, just a $12-$15 call.

Hey Travis, You must have the plastic one? I saw the wooden one for a 24 spot at Cabelas. Mark T does the wooden one sound better? Have you tried both? T-Scout, I have tried the Peacock and didn't have any action. Maybe I suck at it or maybe it just wasn't meant to be the times I tried it. Or maybe no birds heard it. Who knows. I tried the Sandhill crane, because A-WAY Outdoors convinced me to buy one. No avail with it either. I know a crow won't work, because there is like a billion crows per square mile in Ohio County. A few of you have mentioned a car door, but I can't take that with me. I may order the Wooden Palmer unless someone else convinces me they have a better one.

Either style works, i actually used a primo plastic owl call for two years and it is good, but I found a Palmer Hoot tube at the Indy 1500 gun and knife show for $5...It sounds great, I should have bought you one....

Larry, I owned both the plastic and the wooden one and the plastic one went into the trash years ago!! The key is the sound has to come from the gut alot like your duck and goose calls do!! Mark T

Larry..... Markt is right, you have to "hoot" with your diaphragm, don't just blow into it. I've never tried the wooden one.....I'm very happy with my plastic version.
Don't give up on the crow call.... 99% of the time, once the sun comes up I am using the crow. Hit it hard and sharp to get a good shock gobble. If you are within 150-200 yards and all the sudden that gobbler hears a hard crow within his vicinity, he'll fire off a gobble. Remember, you are almost wanting to startle that gobbler.....so be LOUD with the crow. Don't overlook a goose call either as something to try if you aren't getting any responses.

I lost my old Palmer's a few years back.I didn't have a back up at the house for the next mornings hunt. All I could come up with was an old doe bleat call.If you blew it good and hard it sounded ok.I don't think an owl hoot needs to be anything close to dead on to get that early morning gobble.I've played with it some and got it to sound pretty good. :DD Most times I just start with a big single role and thats all it takes. Most all my hunting buddy's get a kick out of my pattened owl hoot followed by a couple bleats. They just point to the gobble and shake their heads!I look forward to this spring because most guys forget about it over the winter and they don't know it's coming.I will always remember the looks and laughs!!! ;D ;D ;D

If I'm hunting alone, I use the Primos Hoot Flute. The three holes allow for changing the pitch and it's worked very well for me. If I'm with the one of my hunting buddies who is an excellent hooter, I never bring my call out. He sounds more like an owl than an owl does. He makes every sound I've ever heard a barred owl make. When he starts the "laugh" phase of his calling, it's not unusual to have several owls fly into trees just above us. If he didn't coax a gobble with his hoots, three or four real owls answering him will really get those toms going! He's not for sale, but will consider renting him out for the right price. P.M. me ;D

I've used my mouth to owl hoot for several years. I can get em to gobble with it just fine and I can put al ot more volume in it than the commercial owl hooters I've tried. I would like a crow call that is louder than the primos I have. First time I blew it I bout poped a vein cause all that air wouldn't go through it !!!

I have been using an hs owl call for years you can't beat an owl way early in the morning, and the birds seem less edgy then if you use a coyote or other locator.

The areas that I hunt have an abundance of hooter type owls. The turkeys dont pay a whole lot of attention to them.
I usually just wait until the gobblers starts on their own.

You've got it rack..... if you are in a known roosting area, just let them get worked up by themselves.

How many of Ya'll add the roll or "laugh" to the end of an owl call? As opposed to the standard 9 bar "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all"? I am trying to learn how to do it , its really hard for me to roll my tongue. I am getting better though, Practice, Practice, Practice I guess. I have a Primos Hoot Flute, and it never leaves the truck, dosent sound real enough for me. Right now I'm usin a Knight and Hale Shock Gobble Owl call. It dosent have a sound chamber, you have to cup you'r hands to create the right sound.
