I feel pretty confident in my mouth calls and slate calls. Having said that, I pretty much go back to the box call for about 80% of my calling. It just seems like I get a realistic sound more easily and don't risk making awkward sounds that may spook birds. I am just curious if others feel the same.

If I'm working birds that I can't see, then my Cody Slate is my go to call every time.
For blind locating and working birds in sight and finishing birds, mouth diaphragms, in particular H.S. Alumistrut calls are my go to calls.
Anymore, I generally leave all my other calls at home.

I have a couple of box calls and several mouth calls... (although I can't use the mouth calls I sound more like a dying cat than a hen) but I always use my Freak crystal slate style call...... I have 3 or 4 other slates but that is the one I have had the most luck with.

It's a toss up between this slate call I made and a Quaker Boy G.P.S. slate that I really love, both work very well and are easy to use for me.

I like the Primos "Many Beards" as it gives a nice easy yelp, But my favorite is my wingbone as many birds haven't heard one and its by far the most realistic sound I have heard. Remember if you sound like a cat that you also don't sound like a hunter. Many people falsly assume that you have to be perfect when you call but turkeys are far from perfect when they speak. You just have to mix your calls up a little. Throw in some quiet clucks and soft purring sometimes and you will be doing more than probably 90% of the hunters out there.

First of all the slate is great, but I broke my favorite one, it had three holes close together and I can not ever remember who made it. But is any of you know drop me a private message so I can get one. Now, I go to the slate with a soft maple striker, the slate is made by Jerry from Rolla, MO. and it is called Poor Valley, and it is the sweetest slate ever. I just can not remember his last name. $20.00 dollars. I have several friction calls, and right now getting ready to try out a new one, and a friend is going to try and make some for me and then try to sell them if they work. I will keep you all informed.
