I've killed them with and without decoys. For an all day sit in a blind put them out for sure. 10 different guys will answer 10 different ways on how many you should put out and if only hens or jake and hens... I put out as many as I have which is 3 or 4. My buddy who I hunt with in Missouri believes in as many as he can also and we put out almost a dozen when we hunt together.

If I'm in a position to get one out without getting busted by the gobbler that just responded to my locator call, I'll definately try to get one or 2 hens out... Otherwise if he sounds off and is close I hit the ground and start calling without a deke.
If I'm set up on a field I always have my 2 hens out in front of where I'm set up at. I do carry a jake deke, but rarely use him just because from my experiences the long beards run in when they see the jake with the hen, versus a nice slow strut....which is what I want to see when I'm hunting.

If you have the ca$h, stuffers are the best but high maintenance and bulky to lug aroundin the woods. I have killed most of my birds with a jake deke. Even when I set up a jake and a hen or 2, they ALWAYS go straight to the jake.

I just can't get myself to use jake decoys. Some hunters will shoot jakes and that scares me. I had a guy sneek in behind me and shoot my goose decoys once. That is a scary feeling.

Thats the same reason I'm surprised to see Primos going so gung ho on the new B mobile full strut gobbler dyke. Looks like an accident waiting to happen to me.

I seen those guys using a stuff gobbler in their videos. At least they had it covered in orange. It was cool to see the toms go after them.

Back to the question posted. Most of the toms I have killed never saw the decoys I had out. they were coming staight to the calling. I still use hen decoys if not for the turkeys, just see what else sees them. I had a red fox sneak in and watch them. He must of known they were fake and took off the other direction. Last year a little ankle biter of a dog came in with the back hair standing tall. I had to run the little guy off and move to a new set up. But when the tom sees the decoy it makes it easier to move the gun if you need to.

Woodmaster and myself killed 5 birds the last couple years that were coming in straight to the decoys.Almost as fast as they could come.
We have also had some birds that acted like the decoys didn't even exist.
I think hunting small properties a blind and decoys is the way to go. I also like using my crossbow instead of the 870 in such cases.

You said you believe a blind is the way to go too-have you had success using a commercial ground blind? I`ve heard the birds don`t seem to notice it at all and they don`t need to be up before hand.

I don't think I'll be spend $430 on a decoy !!! LOL With shipping that's almost 5 bennies on one deke. I think I'll just go down to some local turkey farm and buy a live one. On the way out to my blind, I will whack it and spray paint it black. After that it's Weekend at Bernies until it starts to rot.
