I'm down here south of the border for opening weekend. Sat am I saw a buck, just enough light to see there was white on top of his head & a doe a minute later. Once shooting hours were in I saw a deer crossing about 210yds out and I could see a bigger deer inside the tree line - OK, I have a 1.5yr old doe being followed by a buck - however the second deer won't come out and I was about to loose the first one into the woods on the other side. So I took the shot at it and it went down. Now the 2nd one had entered the open area while I was on the first one, it runs back to the edge but stops, turns and looks around. I can now see my "buck" is a doe (uh oh I think to myself) However I now have a doe broadside and I take her, she ran ~20yds and that was that. When I did the recovery on them sure enough the first one was a button.
Sun am. It's 10min after shooting hours are in and my hunting partner and I are sitting together as he can't stay real long and I have to take him to meet his wife. He sees the first deer of the morning and says "there is a doe if you want to take it" It's about 120yds out and I put the scope on her, see no antler so I take the shot, it runs into the woods and I hear the deer go down. We see a couple of more does but I'm down to my last tag (only allowed 4 the in the zone we hunt here and I've burned 3 on antler-less already so I'm saving it for a good buck) We see a 3rd doe about 225yds out and right behind her is a good tall rack buck - Jeff is only interested in a good buck for the year so this one is his - he shoots and it drops in place. Time for the recovery - his is a good 3.5yr old 8, on to mine. we enter the woods and he sees it first & says "I have bad news" My reply - @#$%&^^ it's a spike; he says "worse than that, it's a spike with one side broken off". The side that was facing us had no antler and neither one of us could see the other one even in our scopes. Well, there goes the buck idea. again. I can shoot one more doe & then I'm tagged out - pray I don't shoot someones cow!
On the bright side I have meat in the freezer (which was bare) and that 270WSM is a deer seeking rifle, 2 doublelungers and a heart shot. I love that thing.
