I lost my hunting spot today that i have had for almost 10 years. I'm almost in shock. The place was not the biggest place or the greatest but i always considered myself lucky to have a place period. It was owned by a good friend of my familys and asking him to hunt every single year was more of a formality as he never had a care in the world if i hunted his land. When i first hunted here 10 years ago, i was the only one. I noticed last year on the opener of gun he had 4 vehicles there. I planned on hunting this weekend so i contacted him this morning like i have done every year and was shocked when he told me he was shutting it off this year as he had too many people last year. Did not make much sense to me as he was the one who allowed all of them in there, but it is what is. Never expected it from him, but it's his land. So now instead of hunting deer i'm going to be hunting land, i'm confident i can get on somewhere, but i might have to give it up my bow season and just focus on getting ready for gun season. A part of me is wondering though if money wasn't involved, it's really the only thing that makes any sense to me. Thanks for listening guys, the wife and kids are gone for 4 days and i had planned on hunting, so i had to get this off my chest somewhere.

Offer him some money, and insurance and to protect his investment. If he's concerned about numbers, ask him what he considers the limit and promise to obey that limit with a contractal agreement binding both parties, you and him both will have some security. But you may be too late if the other group has already done just that.

Sounds like one of his buddies took advantage of him last year and everybody is going to pay the price of "no more" because of it....

Sounds like one of his buddies took advantage of him last year and everybody is going to pay the price of "no more" because of it.... Very possible. I did think he had too many people in there last year for gun season, but i only remember seeing them on the opener and then they were gone. He also has had a nephew that has hunted there in the past, don't know if thats figuring into the equation or not. Last i knew the nephew had a job where he worked out of state a lot and didn't have much time to hunt. His exact words to me "i had about 8 guys in there last year and i think i'm going to shut it off for a year and then go from there". He then told me he appreciated me calling like i did before every season. I thought with me being the "veteran" of that woods that the other newbies would be the one to go, but thats not the case. I took it personal at first, but i realize i did about all i could to keep the rights as long as i did, and it's not a property i would ever pay money to hunt. Too many better places out there if thats the route i want to go, and that may end up having to be the case. He's letting me go get my stands though so that hopefully i can use them elsewhere.

You think that is bad listen to mine. We have had 175 acres in parke county that our family has hunted on for about 9 years. Every year we call the owner in early spring and ask him if it is ok that we go the following year. Last season we were given the okay in april. We stay out and hunt gun only and camp out the first week of the season as a family. We went out a month before season and hung 13 ladders. The guys in our family decided to go down the tuesday before gun and scout. They went to the neighbors house to ask him if we shot a deer if we needed to come ask him for permission or if we could go get it. His response was..."I bought that property 2 months ago and I want all of your stands out of there by thursday or they are mine Worst day of my life was going out there for the last time and taking down all those damn stands in a freakin rainstorm. Bout the biggest kick in the nuts i have ever had. Best part was the guy who used to own it told us he forgot to call us. Only thing that would have been worse was if we had camp set up and the guy came down and told us to get the hell out on opening day

Mine's not as bad as yours but still gets under my skin. My cousin owns a small piece of property and i've hunted it for a couple years and i always call and ask before i hang a stand or camera or even hunt it. Last week was no exception he said it was fine so i took my wife out for her first try at bow hunting, we were in by 3:00pm and all was good till about 5:30pm when his soon to be wife got home and got out the golf cart and started running it all over the pasture over where my wife was, yellin and hollerin and all kinds of stupid stuff she even came over in my direction doing all the same stuff. I know this isn't my property so i can't say anything but if you give a person permission to hunt their i think they should atleast be respectful when you are their.

Lot of that going on thesedays. I lost EIGHT great places to hunt while living in Indiana, mostly to housing developments.

Most of the time, heart to heart is not as effective as some grease on the palm....green grease.

Happened to me about 6 years ago - I was devastated!!! Went out and found some PUBLIC land that no one can kick me off of and haven't looked back!!! Have killed bigger deer in the last 4 years than I had ever seen on private land, and surprisingly, MUCH less interactions with other hunters! Go deep in the woods and kill yourself a bug one!

Sad news and a sign of the times. I upset some saying so but will repeat it.
Supply and demand will rule. More deer hunters, more after Mr. Big, more areas tied up, more pressure on farmers resulting in situations like above, is going to kick Mr Average Deer hunter into oblivion within one generation.
I thought I had lost my spot of 40 plus years but found out I was "misinformed" by a family member of the owner. However, it will become that again when the elderly owner passes away and the family members dictate. Every year I treat as possiblity my last there and continue looking...fruitlessly.
Good luck! I hope you find one better! God Bless

That sucks. I'm a new hunter and I'll agree with the guy that said the average deer hunter won't bother anymore. I've been looking for a spot for 3 years with very little luck. I can't even get a spot to hunt coyotes! Being in central IN, the nearest public land is 40+ minutes away. I guess I'm going to have to just go bite the bullet and drive out to be able to hunt at all, I'm tired of begging year after year with no luck. I just roll my eyes when I hear experienced hunters talking about wanting to get more people involved in hunting and grow the next generation of hunters. That crowd gets real quiet when as a new hunter you ask for ideas on where to hunt. Anyway - good luck with grabbing a new spot, and if you get one - tell us how you did.

Im part owner of my hunting property but that could change some day. Before the economy went down hill the property was estimated to be worth a little over a million dollars because of where it is. In a few years if the economy comes back it might be for sale. h.h.

I will never pay money to hunt. It's only a matter of time IMO, before the states deer herd will be privatized.

Thanks guys. I just got in from removing all my stands from the place. There were still stands in there that were not mine, not sure if the other people just haven't got the news or if the property owner was feeding me a line of BS. I'll find out for sure when i drive by the place on the opener of gun to see if any trucks are sitting in his drive.
Daworz, i live in Cass County. I'm not sure, but i think maybe i have spoken with you before several years ago on the huntingnet site. You used to do a lot of hunting at mississinewa if i remember? I'll keep ya in mind, trying to get my thoughts and options here together on some short notice. So far i have been invited to one property by a friend of my brothers. He actually said he missed a real nice 8 pointer this morning. So if nothing else at least i have that. This has been an eye opening experience for sure.
