Never owned one but am in the market for a new or used one. Any words of wisdom? Brands to get or avoid? Snap, velcro or press & seal types, are they all good? TIA

HM I bought the tuxedo type roll-up that uses velcro on the sides and compression type locks on the end. It works well; rolls into roughly an 8 inch diameter cylinder which allows you total access to your cargo area. Also you can drop your tail gate to just slide something in. As long as I used the velcro the bed stayed dry.

From the ones I have had on my trucks Snap on's work well but the down side is if you drive and work in dust it gets up in them and makes it hard to take them off and plus you need to keep grease or WD 40 in the snaps or there very hard to get on and off when they get older. Had 1 velcro and will not buy another they may have got better but if you park outside and it snows hard or rains it will pool and pull the cover off it just never smeed to stay on very well for me www.extang.com/docs/tufftonno.html this is the one I have now it does not show it very well but it has a J hook on the track and than cover hooks up under so far I like it. All 3 of mine have been the extang brand so far they have been good. The three above can be bought new for about 300 bucks or a bit less.

Only takes a few seconds to roll and unroll.

Only problem is when the velcro wears out on the Truxedo. My wife's truck has one, and the velcro on the cover itself is shot and no longer sticks. Without the velcro holding the cover down, the cover billows up, to the point that I've got bungee straps run over the cross support pipes just to hold the cover in place. The truck is an '02 and the cover has been on the truck since before we bought it in '05. The velcro on the cover has been no good for at least 2 years now.

I had one on my previous truck and it served us well. We purchased it from Tillman's Truck Gear in Greenwood back in 1994. It was on the truck when I sold it in 2005. I don't recall the brand but it really held up well.
Ours was the j-hook type and it always worked well. My brother had a "snap type" on his Ford and had a lot of trouble. He ended up just leaving it rolled up. I will say that the biggest issue is trying to get any soft cover back on if it's cold out. I tried to never roll it up for hauling in the winter.

I have a Lund tri fold and will not own another Lund product because of it.
The latches on the underside are pot metal and plastic. If the pot metal didn't break first the plastic did. Interested in this thread as well because I will be in the market for a new one soon.

Roll-n-Lock makes a great retractable cover. Easy to install yourself.
