O.k. i was thinking the other day about the economy and hunting and fishing if you will, but what i was thinking is what if you are a young person who has a car but can't afford a pick-up truck let alone a 4x4 truck , but you are hunting and fishing crazy how would you go about getting around to your prime hunting and fishing real estate without getting your only car torn up or smelling of fish or like a butcher shop. lol I'm sure that others on here have experienced this problem at one point or another and i thought that maybe for our younger members you all might be able to give these folks some of your wisdom from back in the day when we all went through tough times and were just getting a foothold on life... WOW the memories that come flooding back...! "Wisdom from back in the day " - well I can tell you THIS for certain - a Mustang GT hatchback does NOT a hunting vehicle make!! (1) off road traction SUX; (2) ground clearance SUX; (3) getting blood out of your subwoofer is a PITA!!! ;D

When I was younger the CAR was the second vehicle when I could finally afford one. The truck was first priority. An '84 2-wheel drive Dodge really will go just about anywhere.

I was "lucky" I guess. My first vehicle was Dads hand me down 1972 Chevy short wheel base 4X4. 3 on the tree transmission. NO power steering or brakes , it had a jillion mile on it, AM radio. The one cool thing about it. It got me out in the sticks and back and it did have a gun rack in the rear window. I had it for a year and discovered that girls were not all that bad to hang around with and started seeing them in a different light, if you know what I mean. I decided the truck wasn't cool enough for me. I traded it for a 1974 Grand Torino and soon realized I really screwed up come hunting and trapping season.

After seein' antiwheeze's pic, I couldn't help but think of one of my turkey hunts this year. I decided to save a little on fuel costs and headed out with all my gear packed on my Beemer. I never bagged a bird and, yeah, my bike is worth a bit more than the "hog-hauler" shown above. However, it's amazing what you can pack on bike when ya put yer mind to it!

Buick LeSaber had a huge trunk and a large surface area to tie deer down on the hood. Where there is a will there is a way!

The trunk of a 96 Saturn SL2 will hold an amp, a 10" subwoofer, and an adult doe if folded properly. It is easier to borrow a truck from a friend. I see a lot of deer on those trailer hitch platforms on SUV's.

I love these pics and the memories of how people can make it happen if they want to do something, keep'em coming, and i love the one about the gun rack, i wonder why you don't see "Gun Racks" in the back of pick-ups anymore? Back when I had that old truck with the gun rack in the back window it usually had a gun hanging from it. Even when I drove it to school. As soon as the 3:00 bell rang I was off to the woods. A kid doing that these day would probably be committed to a mental ward.

Other than my first buck I killed back in 1997, I have had all the other deer in the trunks of my car. With my 100 mile round trip to work I cannot afford to have a truck to drive and at the moment I can't afford to buy one to have as an extra vehicle either. One opening morning my sister and I doubled on some does and we had both of them and all our hunting gear packed in the back of an Eagle Talon. My current car is a Chevy Cavalier and it has had quite a few deer in the trunk of it. Last year I had two does that dressed out weighed about 220 pounds in the trunk. It just looks a little strange when I pop the trunk lid open and deer legs come springing up in the air. I would love to have a truck, but I will just live with what I have at the moment.

Due to gas prices I went to a Honda Accord five years ago. Every season, I go to big lots and buy a few cheap plastic tarps. About $2 each. I line my trunk with them and toss the dear in. Did I mention I am frugal? Oh, and I made a deer cart at work. I am a fabricator. Those things are a life saver. Dragging a deer is a bear.

Ah........sweet memories. Keep in mind we're STill MAKING THEM! lol
First BRAND SPANKING NEW car (newly married...) was a 71 Vega......station wagon.
I recall everyone laughing............till deer season. Caught a bit of "flack" from wifey (at the time) "YOU GOT BLOOD ALL OVER THE INSIDE OF THE CAR!!.....yeah so?"......several vehicles since (2 more wives........sigh), figured out Dewey the Wonder dog dont care what I put a deer in........he LIKES it. Less arguments (unless he dont WANT to go IN), full dedication, always glad to see me..........hmmm. ROFL! He don't do dishes or cook either though!
TrapperDave's van brings back memories of a black chevy van I "bought for the boy". ;D
Killed one doe GOING to hunt (opening day of archery) and killed a 6pt buck coming HOME from hunting that year (during the rut), WITH the van.
When same PD officer showed up the second time and I sat there in full face camo (bow hunting) I really didn't think I was going to be able to explain............to his acceptance?
Made for a full freezer that year though with what I and my oldest shot! Insurance company had NO sense of humor though.
Yankee ingenuity, my friend. Ive tied em to my rear bumper (dont like it but not going to NOT hunt either) and Ive seen em stuffed in the "trunk"? of a VW bug.....Ford escort......you name it.
Currently I dumbed into a 200 dollar Jimmy (no joke)....sometimes a divorce CAN work out.......for someone! God Bless. Steve
