This process was started because rep. Friend thought we needed to reduce the deer herd.
Solutions
Add an antlerless season. Makes sense.
Reduce the number of days in the gun seasons and start them later. All of the data from the past decade in Indiana shows that when the season starts early there are more deer killed, antlered bucks make up a smaller percentage of the harvest, and button bucks make up a smaller percentage of the total harvest.
New goal change the harvest ratio to 60% does and 40% bucks.
Solution look to surrounding states like Illinois and Ohio. They have a late start date and a short season. Ohio kills many more does than Indiana in their firearms season. Both states average the same kill ratio as Indiana does currently.
Last parting thought. All hunters should stop whining and accept the changes. Only exception to this rule is if you are a stake holder and you think you must kill a doe before a buck in the urban zone in that case you no longer support the proposal.
If I left anything out I'm sure someone will correct me.

Yup, add that early thing, the late thing [cold, cold, cold] and leave the gun seasons alone, and no bucks from Nov.1 to the opening of gun season. Fine with me.

Does anyone know of any state that is looking to reduce the number of their firearm days to increase the kill?
I do know for a fact that Wisconsin (who has a bigger problem than we do) is looking to increase their firearm days from 9 to 16. Sound familiar only a flip flop from our DNR's proposal?
Starting early…..
The data shows unequivocally that more deer (bucks and dos) are killed when the season starts early. Why is that? Because it is within the rut period when deer (bucks and does) are the most active. That is also the time when the vehicle and deer collisions spike. I’m not sure how convincing an argument would be to the legislators that the DNR is moving the gun hunters out of that big movement time period and basically letting the herd run wild with just bowhunter chasing them.
Not sure Rep. Friend will buy into that one…. Unintended consequences could be happening.

Going back to Friend's letter, he was referring to a problem in Northern Indiana, so it's just easier to color the whole state rather than do it by problem areas?

If they sincerely desire to up the tally they would reduce the gun season to one weekend! Obviously, the shorter the season, the higher the kill!
I woulda suggested a one day season, but we don't wanna wipe out the entire herd!
