I was just thinking about antler worship, and the thought struck me that our deer contest here promotes it by giving extra points for more antler points.
Maybe we should award 5 points for does and eleven points (11 to help cut down on ties) for any buck. (as explained in the DNR rules)
Am I way off base here? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this. You won't hurt my feelings if you disagree. Hopefully someone will present an angle I hadn't thought of to make me see straight.

No change. Hunters will take what "they" want regardless of the contest headgear points.

We award five points per deer plus the number of points for a buck. There are no extra points for killing a 160" eight point vs. A 95" eight point.

You both are correct.

Decatur,
I think you are mis-understanding the term "antler worshiping". Antler worshiping is trying to manipulate other hunters to hunt, manage and kill only the bucks deemed worthy of a trophy in the worshipers eyes and using all means to get that agenda done, even if it means taking hunting opportunity, seasons and weapons choice away from others, other words "antlers at all cost".
In my opinion we should give 10 points for doe and only the number of antler points for the bucks. h.h.

Under the new proposed rules we'll kill so many does that we'll swamp them "trophy hunters"- and we'll do it in fewer days! (note to self: buy bigger freezer before November).

I didn't misunderstand it H.H. My interpretation of an antler worshipper are the guys that look down their noses at deer that don't score high, and think people should only shoot bucks up to their standards, plus all of things you listed..
I would agree with your scoring system. Makes sense to me.

I'm sorry but killing a doe doesn't excite me. I do it to help keep the herd balanced.
Call it what you want but I'd rather SEE a big buck than kill 100 does.

I have killed several nice bucks but I still get very excited every time I send an arrow through a slick head as a matter of fact I don't think I would like deer hunting as much if it weren't for killing does, one and done on the bucks isn't very fulfilling

Here is my opinion on the contest.
It is you all's contest. I'll go along with whatever the membership wants to do.
However, I doubt very seriosuly if anyone on here hunts to win the contest. IOW - A person is not going to pass up a nice 8 pointer cause his team coudl use a ten pointer to pull ahead in the contest.
I've got to believe that everyone just goes hunting, kills what they normally kill and lets the chips fall where the may.

Please, no offense but I probably pass more does by the start of firearms than half the guys on this site have in range. May be the same group but usually in range of my hoyt. Thats ludicrous!

Contests and record books aren't bad....it's only when people become obsessed with them (which is pretty rare), that problems arise. Remember....before you (not you Woody) go and place judgment on trophy hunters....there is a difference between being obsessed with antlers, and being obsessed with hunting mature bucks. It's the latter that does it for me.
